ISP won't/can't release my domain name - 12/3/2001 17:15:45
Well, let me explain. I got my domain name with my ISP I have now, thru Network Solutions, 2 yrs ago. I redid my website and set it up with a new host, Addr.com - last summer. Now if I want to check out my website with my domain name address, I get sent to my ISP old page. Addr.com says its a problem with my ISP, the ISP say's Not Their Problem. That was one reason I left them in the first place. Oh, just thought of this. I'll be leaving the ISP as soon as cable comes in, one month. So, maybe just wait it out and at that point I won't have any connection with the present ISP anyway.

Another thing -(thank you)my domain name will be coming up for renew. Do you think I'm asking for trouble changing from the highest priced vendor (network solutions or whoever they are now) to a lesser priced domain name vendor.

Thanks so much for your help. http://www.afamilyjournal.com Dar

You must change the address of the Domain NameServers. There is form at network solutions for administrating your name (left sidebar, first item if my RAM serves me correctly). Midway down the page they ask for the names of the NameServers. These can be given to you by your current ISP. Submit the form...24 - 72 hours later the name resolves to where it should go.

question 2 - I thought NETSOL was pretty good. They are with verisign now and that could be good. I usually advise going with the 10 year plan. $200. That changeover is a paper, snail mail contract change I think. I get a discount on names and the come to... guess what $20.

Caywind: Thanks for your help. But I'm just confused. If *you* go to my website via my URL, you will get on the proper server, Addr.com. If I use the same URL, I get to my old site with current ISP. The only way I can get to my website is using www.dar.addr.com. Does what you suggest fix this?

And question 2 : think I'll stay with NetSol.

Thanks for all your help.

Now it's my turn to be confused? Your domain name is afamilyjournal.com. When I click the link I get the page and when I go to dar.addr.com I get the same page. Or is it...It could be an exact replica of the original page.

A new account may take a while to "propogate" through the DNS system (it's really busy right now). 3 to 7 days. Your old page is still alive at it's old address until that account is closed. Cable Rocks!

follow and see if this sounds right. Your current address afamilyjournal.com is resolving to it's same location as always, your old (almost)ISP. You got a new web host addr.com and signed up for the address afamilyjournal.com.

Your domain registrar Network Solutions is pointing afamily.com to old ISP and needs to have the DNS NameServer info changed in the Network Solutions website. I don't see the nameserver information. It may be in the members pages. It usually is something like this...
These are examples only.
ns0.addr.net
###.###.###.###
ns1.addr.net
###.###.###.###

e-mail them and find out these names, fill out the form at network solutions, 24 - 72 hours...

Caywind - the plot thickens. with the present ISP I only had my domain name and a webpage that said "under construction". What you see by using my URL is my new website at ADDR>com. But not me. I go to the page at ISP site that says "Under Construction". I have fought this since July. But something just made me bring it up to the experts here. It may just clear itself up when I get rid of the ISP and go cable. If not, the problem is then somewhere on my computer. Any ideas now? Addr.com says it may be ISP not clearing the 'cache' or something like that. ISP says "not my problem" and hangs up. Thanks for your input. Later - DAr

Got it. I get to your page at addr.com from this side because my nameserver finds the nameserver at NETSOL, or addr.com first, and it sends me to the proper site. Your ISP is your nameserver and since it is the first nameserver you contact, it resolves it to the old site, because it's DNS entry hasn't been changed, (for the old site), or deleted.

Canceling the account will solve it for you but make sure they delete the DNS entry from their NameServer!

P.S. You may want to check out the info at Network Solutions for your domain name. If your ISP is being this stubborn with this. It really is two lonely little lines that need to get zapped. The records at network solutions have an area called a technical contact and it's probably Your current ISP. This is a number that NETSOL contacts in an emergency (site down) and if it's your current ISP they don't sound very co-operative.

Boy, all this to change numbers into names

When any of us connect - the first DNS server we hit (going up the chain) is our ISP. So, when I or caywind type in the domain we get sent to a core DNS server that has propagated with the new/correct IP#. When you type it in you go to your ISP's DNS serever that still has the old entry - have them remove any/all reference to your domain name.

Thanks to both of you. I'm going to arm myself with this info as a printout and march right to their office. Again, you people are great! So glad I found and belong here. Dar

I feel your pain. I had all three com, org, net with my site. I registered though Earthlink, big mistake. It took me two months after I left earthlink to get to the right place.

Look for a Free DNS service and have them like to whatever your IP address is that should clear up most of it. It worked for me.

new saga to an old story. I was so hopefull and waiting for the new cable service to get rid of this present ISP. Read in the newspaper today that the new computer cable service was being handled by @home.com (hope I have that name right), now they've gone bankrupt - guess I'll be with present ISP longer. Thanks everyone. Dar
