PROBLEM: I want to use my company’s logo in the website I am developing. I have been experimenting with two web design programs, both of which are supposed to be top quality programs – (1) Adobe Dreamweaver CS3; and (2) Microsoft’s Expression Web. The logo is very simple. It consists of two shapes (a triangle and an oval - both of which have color gradients in them) and three words. The logo is easily created in any word processing program (e.g., WordPerfect or WORD). To create the logo, I simply insert a triangle and an oval and then tinker with the gradient settings. Bingo. Done. However, I cannot import the logo into the web design software and get it to look sharp. The web design software I am using (Dreamweaver and Expression Web) does not allow you to create these objects in the program – you have to import than from Photoshop or some other similar program. Yet whenever I try to import the logo it ends up fuzzy, unclear – not sharp or crisp whatsoever. I have created the logo in the word processing program and then saved it as a JPEG or GIFF and every other format available, but when I import it into Photoshop or Dreamweaver or Expression Web, THE WHOLE PAGE APPEARS – THE LOGO ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE 8 ½ x 11 PAGE. Inevitably, when I try to cut it up, it turns out crappy. The million dollar question: How do I import my logo into Dreamweaver or Expression Web and have it look as good as it does when I create it in WORD (sharp, clean and clear)???

If I understand your problem correctly, You have created your company logo with MS Word but cannot get a decent copy of the logo on your web page. I would attempt to re-create your logo in Photoshop. If you can do it in MS Word, it can be done in Photoshop or any other decent graphics program. Dreamweaver is not a graphic creation tool so no, you cannot do it in Dreamweaver. MS Word is also not a proper graphic creation program. I have created the logo in the word processing program and then saved it as a JPEG or GIFF and every other format available, but when I import it into Photoshop or Dreamweaver or Expression Web, THE WHOLE PAGE APPEARS – THE LOGO ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE 8 ½ x 11 PAGE. Inevitably, when I try to cut it up, it turns out crappy. Because your logo has a 'blend' or 'gradient' it will not look right saved as a GIF. GIF can only render 256 colors. A JPEG would be your best bet in this situation.

Is there a decent website design program where you can create graphics within the program. I know Microsoft Publisher 2007 has these capabilities; but it lacks many of the other important features of Dreamweaver (and the other good website design software). Aren't there any programs out there that do both?

Aren't there any programs out there that do both? None that I'm aware of. MS Publisher, I don't particularly like that program because of all the bloated code it generates. Don't get web design confused with graphic design. They are different animals all together. There is no 'Magic Bullet' program that does everything equally as well as the programs that are specialized. Those programs that claim they can do everything, end up doing a poor job of all around, in my humble opinion. I am wondering why you created your logo in MS Word. Do you not need printed material with your company logo as well as web? Your logo should be really be a vector graphic so that it can be designed once and because it is a vector graphic, can be resized to fit what ever purpose you desire. Also, a vector graphic can be converted to a screen graphic (or bitmaped graphic as it is sometimes referred to) for the web. If you need help with that I might be able to point you in the right direction to get that done properly. Good luck

Thank you very much for the information. I have both Dreamweaver and Photoshop. I'm somewhat of a putz as I have yet to figure all this out. I have been experimenting with Photoshop and I have yet to figure out how to reproduce my logo. What graphic design program do you recommend? Preferrably, I want one that can create the vector logo you mentioned above. (I think Photoshop specializes in revising photographs, correct? I am not interested in this.) I want a good program that can create top quality graphic elements. Thank you for your time. Good karma to you.

Adobe Fireworks, Adobe Illustrator or Aldus Freehand are probably your best bet for vector graphic creation tools. The learning curve is a little steep if you are new to such programs although all the tools are similar in each one so once you get used to one you should not have any problems adjusting to any of the others. There are tons of good tutorials on the web for any and all of these programs. Just google for tutorials and you should have no problem finding a tutorial that will show you what you want to accomplish. Good luck.
