I guess it depends on your abilities and how much you want to spend. Off-hand I'd say that if money isn't an option then I'd go for Fireworks. I'm not particularly artistic myself and so I tend to stick to the cut-down version of Photoshop called Photoshop Elements (I'm a cheapskate). If money's a real issue then you can always download The Gimp which is quite a powerful (although not particularly user-friendly) graphics package which will do pretty much everything that Photoshop will do (although you have to talk nicely to it and offer it sweets to get it to behave). There are also packages like Xara which are specifically designed for logos but to be honest I've yet to see a Xara designed logo that doesn't look like a remnant from 1999 (not that they don't exist - I've just never seen them even on Xara's own demo pages). So my advice would be that if you have a little money to spare and some artistic ability then go for Fireworks. If you have artistic ability but no money then look at the Gimp. If you aren't particularly artistic then you might want to look instead at forming a business relationship with a graphic designer who would hopefully be able to produce reasonably priced logos for you.

don't forget though that if you want to design commercial logos for PRINT in a professional way (i.e. not just off an inkjet printer etc) then you'll need a proper vector app designed for print too like adobe illustrator or corel draw. if it's only for web then Adobe fireworks is best.

"this logo software suffers from lack of compatibility with various tools which is why it is widely criticized." (from above link) i've never heard this before- can you elaborate? now if you'd said that it wasn't being continued any longer as adobe were keeping just illustrator then i could understand it ;) also software is a non-countable noun and should be referred to only as software for singular and plural (even in American English?!)
