What's the best way to clean up a web? - 12/3/2001 20:02:22
Okay.. I've played around with creating a web or two and have learned alot while doing it. Now I want to clean up one of the published webs and get rid of all the files on the published site so I can start from scratch. I want to publish a totally different web that is based on one of the templates and the Spooky log-in I got from here. I have checked the "Publish all pages and overwrite any on the destination" but it just seems to add the new files (because they have different names) and seems to be making it more of a mess than ever. Can I just use an FTP program and delete all the files on the site? Should I leave any files? Looking for suggestions in how I should handle this.

After publishing a new site to the same url and overwriting everyting I would run a complete report on the site and move all un-used files to a new folder. Clear your browser cash, then do a complete run through of the whole site before deleting anything. Heck leave the folder there for a while just to make sure. View Reports Site Summary Move all unlinked files to a new folder called _backup or something like that.

Sandy, When you delete "all" the files are there any that should be left alone? I tried cleaning out a site once and publishing the new site to it but ended up with no site and no access to the server 'til the ISP could reset the extensions. I'm asking because I've got another similar situation on the horizen. Thanks I think, therefore I am, I think.

Mike, you should be able to delete everything. Anything that is essential to the new site will be replaced when the site is republished. If you used ftp to remove the old files, that's probably how the extensions were corrupted. Otherwise, everything should have been fine...maybe just a fluke. Bill, I think that's something different. Tom is looking for custom work there, I think, unless he's come up with something else just recently.
