How to sell my internet business - 10/26/2007 5:36:51
Hi folks. 5 years ago I have developed application and sold it online until right now. But now, as I have a new business (non IT), I'd like to leave the programming world and sell what I have started 5 years ago to anyone or any company. The business is about selling .NET web application generator component as well as the .NET web component (which developed by my self, of course), so the target market is .NET developers. My problem is I don't know where and how to begin. Like, is there any web site which specialized for selling/buying internet business? how much does it cost? etc. etc. What I'd like to sell are domain, web site, source code, copyright, etc. The idea is "I sold my internet business" so the one who bought the business, can continue to sell. Anyone can give me some advices?

zmurfin, your post peaked my interest. i have to agree w/ tailslide, sitepoint has produced a few good articles related to what you are considering, as well as vitamin. you might want to go out and check those two sites for ideas as to pricing / value / marketing your business. I also wanted to provide you with some things that as a potential buyer (i am likely not interested since it's .net and i am primarily .php/mysql but some others on here might be), I would be looking for... 1. recurring income: does your software / site / business have a good recurring income model? are your customers on recurring subscriptions, is it a one time purchase, annual subscription, etc. 2. annual income: as a prospective buyer i would also be interested in seeing your past few years numbers. 3. customer base: what is your current customer base? also would like to see some numbers over time, example: how many customers last year -vs- this year, etc. so i could get an idea as to your current growth rate. 4. seo: when was your site registered, what is your current position for keywords, how much traffic do you see? what are your referrers, etc. I am sure that there are some other things that might be good for a perspective buyer to check out that i have forgotten. As a method to find a buyer for the site you might need to do a little research, but I met a few people at conferences, etc. that handle purchases and buyouts for sites, you could probably google a few that could help. Just for the sake of stirring up a little interest would you post a link to your business on here? (if that's okay w/ the site moderators?, i think that i have seen it done before)... Good luck in your future endeavors and the sale of your company.

Sitepoint and Digitalpoint are the two forums I have used to sell past projects. Sitepoint costs $ to list, but results have been good. Digitalpoint is free, but your potential buyer may have to weed through some real junk sales to find your diamond in the rough.

DevShed might also be another forum for developer. DomainName Forum is another one that comes to mind as well.

The sites mentioned are a good starting point, but you should be aware that - for the most part - these sites are not selling at retail prices. Here are a few more places to start: DNForum.com DNState.com WebHostingTalk.com NamePros.com eBay.com - yes, you can sell a site/business on eBay... If you want a chance at selling for more money go to Google and search for 'sell web site'. The sites paying for Ads are also some of the same sites buying Ads to 'buy web sites' or buy 'internet business'. These businesses are looking to sell for a larger multiple of income. This usually means it will take a lot longer to sell your business. www.bizMP.com is a site that aggregates sales threads from multiple sites (including some mentioned above). I think you can pay to advertise there also. Another option is the Forum Stealth Campaign - Not that you are trying to do that here, but it is a good plan. Basically, you start a thread about how to sell your site/business and hope that someone who reads your posting is interested in buying your business.

If you own a site which describes your product then start affiliate program and recruit affiliates for your site. They will sell your products. There are some free affiliate networks and join them.
