d a v e -> review of chargercomposites.com (11/1/2007 17:07:08)

i asked for an initial design review for this when i started it about what 2 years ago?! and now this (the site of the company i work for) is virtually finished and not for my want of trying!!! my boss has been so slow getting the stuff to me but at least he's paid now ;)

(the main company charger composites is comprised of 3 parts: composites, sailing, and skiboats; but the ski site is the old one so don't bother looking at that!)

i'm not keen on the splash/gateway but it's how he wanted it so...

thanks in advance

dave

Very nice Dave, I like it.

I just think that the smaller links on the opening page with "Charger..." written over the top of them are just a bit hard to read. Perhaps if the background paintbrush design thingy was a fraction darker?

Could "Companies We Work With" be renamed to "Affiliates" so it fits on one line in the menu?

i see what you mean... that's the problem with having that sort of logo that doesn't work at small sizes very well ;)
still, i didn't make the logo :)

i'll fix that

Hi Dave

I'd definitely have your skip links etc in a list rather than just links separated by pipes (you can use a background image to do that with the list).

Personally, with the news thing - I'd have the first story open and the others closed. I'd also use another plus sign image for the hover/focus effect. I'd also reduce the text size of the form labels and maybe space them out a bit by putting a bottom margin on the inputs.

You've got the dotted left border on the second sidebar but it looks a bit odd when there's nothing on the right hand side - I'd either have something on each page or only have the border on the page with the second sidebar (use an id on the body to specify in the stylesheet).

The only other thing seems a bit vague but the left hand alignment of the text and images doesn't line up (eg the news image and the plus sign for the link).

Oh and you need the closing "/" for your favicon link.

Most of the above frankly is just me being picky though - it works really well.

---- - what's wrong with pipes? :) i could be a bit out of date but i thought that that was the type of separator that was required for accessible links??

- might leave it as it - especially when the first story is so long ;)

- i've filled it up with 'sitemap'

yep i know - copied the link text from the favicon making site :) checking the site in linux last night and noticed it but didn't have my site connection details there...

Most of the above frankly is just me being picky though - it works really well.

- i'm looking for picky :) i've been staring at the thing for so damn long i don't notice them any more (like nicole picked up on the contrast in the images on the index page)

thanks

Personally I like the list better for the purpose (seems more correct)- one of the side-effects of using lists is that you then no longer actually need the separator as the list items are then separate.

But, hey it's hardly the crime of the century so I wouldn't worry too much.

(you know Dave I'm still laughing about that review you posted a while back - "it's shit" - were the twins acting up!)

d a v e -> RE: review of chargercomposites.com (11/2/2007 9:08:27)

i was just a bit tired and i think after a while of reading posts on forums (fora...?) then you just think let's cut to the chase and do them a favour ;)
anyway it was s||t

i've sorted the forms out and redefined the a:focus for the sailing site so it stands out.

anyone else got anything to comment on??
