view source protected??? - 11/6/2007 14:22:12
Hi again,
When looking at a competitors website and checking out their keywords/meta tags...i noticed a very cool feature that i have never seen before.

When I clicked "view source" to look at the code it would not allow it....does anyone know how that could be? Is this a third party add on or something?

Thanks
Spooky

There are loads of sites out there that'll sell you supposedly 100% secure scripts that will block "view source", but they can all be got round pretty simply. Basically, if it's on the web it can be copied if someone wants it bad enough.

Womble's right - don't bother with this it doesn't work beyond a cursory inspection.

Don't know which version you were looking at (there are a few) but one of the ones I've seen recently - on here in fact - particularly annoyed me. You see many of these scripts rely on disabling right-click - but you can't do that with Opera so the usual fastest way around a disabled right-click was to open the page in Opera. Only this particular no right-click script banned Opera completely! You get some rude message about not trying to copy the source code! So imagine that you're just some innocent Opera user who goes to this site - you'd be pretty cross!

That's just an example, but like the other examples, that one didn't keep even me out (and I'm not a "proper" techie) for more than about 15 seconds.

They're just pointless in the end - although I do understand that it can be really irritating to find that your code has been copied (or your content for that matter)- This http://www.copyscape.com/ is a good site for checking for stolen content.
