Site Map Submission - 11/23/2007 15:49:21
How important do you think Site Map Submission to Google is for page ranking? Also, if my webmaster forgets to submit to google, can I see this on my google webmaster account? Then i'd just go ahead and do it for him. Thanks.

Well Google is not the only search engine to use an XML sitemap. There are others. Also, submit the sitemap on your own Google account - that way you are always in control and you can see the errors, etc

It's been awhile since i took your great advice, but strangely the sitemap still isn't indexed, at least not on google. (even though are regular site has been indexed for a decade)

Is it necessary to put a link on my regular page to the sitemap? Maybe this is why.

Hmmmm.

Are you actually submitting the sitemap in the Webmaster Tools section? That is actually different that a sitemap page.

I use an ASP page I made from code here:

http://www.iteam5.net/francesco/sitemap_gen/

I just point the Google Sitemap (under Webmaster Tools) to that ASP page and my site is updated quite readily. The scripts generate a sitemap that Google can use easily. I do not have an actual 'sitemap' page on my site.

Hope it helps.

There are two different types of sitemap. One is an html page that contains links to all the pages on your site. That's a human readable sitemap.

The other is an XML sitemap and that is not human readble but Google and others love them. That's the one you submit to Google in the webmaster tools. You won't see it and it's pointless linking to it.

The short answer is: Not very important.

aha! this answers my question. Yes, it is an XML sitemap that is submitted to Google in the webmaster tool section.

The only thing is, webmaster tools says that it hasn't been indexed yet, though it's been submitted for about a year.

But if it's not very important to SE rankings, i won't sweat it too much.

And i certainly won't link it now to my homepage.

thank you!

It all depends how easily your other pages can be found through your home page. The main reason for a site map is to make it easier for the search bots to find all the pages of the entire web site.

Do you rank better? Maybe, it all depends what other content is available within your other pages.

When you are in webmaster tools - what subsection are you in? For example, I go into the Webmaster Tools and click on the domain name. Then I have an Overview, Dianostics, Statistics, Links, Sitemaps, Tools.

Did you verify the web site through Google and add the proper page / META information?

You can also do it via the robots.txt file but submitting to Google, Live, yahoo etc manually then allows you to see some specific reports

I click on the website, then go to the sitemap subsection.

btw, the site is verified on google.

however, i don't see the message anymore that read something like, "your sitemap is not yet indexed by Google. Indexing may take time". So i think the issue has been resolved, though i don't necessarily see that the sitemap's been indexed. The website has been indexed, though, which is most important. thanks again, Cory. :)Farrell

Google has just done a big update which has affected PR all over the place. They may have got you as part of that.

I was trying to see if I had that message on any of mine but I did not. For example - I see
Sitemap statistics:
Total URLs: 16219
Indexed URLs: 3113
on the sitemap section.

I do remember reading something about there somewhere but I can't remember where. You should be able to re-submit it though on that page.
