Last week, Microsoft released Visual Web Developer 2008. It uses the same designer engine as Expression Web. It doesn't have all the features of Expression Web (more on that) but considering that it's free, it is quite powerful. One of the main features it does share with Expression Web is all of the CSS tools/properties windows. And if you do any ASP.NET stuff or want to get started in that, VWD 08 is a must have.

Thanks for the tip. I would like to see a lot more of VWD stuff in the full version of Expression.

Haven't looked at it but is this a replacement / upgrade from Visual Studio or is it a subset? I currently use FP and VS and I find the 2 together covers a lot of ground. Except for the CSS of course...[;)]

I guess you could say it's an upgraded subset of Visual Studio. It's the free version of the Visual Studio 2008 limited to web development.

Yeah, it takes a crazy long time to install.

Would be interested in knowing why "install" slow. I'm a FP2003 user and being an amateur am quite happy with it. However, with Microsoft's illegal copy preventatives, I'm concerned that someday I will no longer be able to use my copy . . . not that I can't hand code (I've been upgrading my sites to meet W3C's HTML 4.01 Strict and CSS standards as well as Section 508 accessibility to a degree), I just like to see what my page looks like as I'm doing it. And although I don't have many sites where I use FrontPage's Shared Borders, I do like Navigation view.

It's just that I may find myself in the market for something when I can't use my copy of FP2003 any longer which I read somewhere, you can use on same computer but not on a new one or if you change the hard-drive you may have to call Microsoft to see if they will be kind enough to give you another keycode and that the limit may be up to 8 times?

Would be interested in your thoughts on this.

I would think the only reasons you may need to move from FP2003 are:

1. MS no longer support it. No more fixes, patches or upgrades.
2. FPSEs are no longer supported and hosts are starting to drop them so it will become more difficult to find hosting.

If you can code then seriously take a look at UltraEdit which I've been trialling. It has pretty much everything I need and then some and it does previews in the actual browsers that are on your machine. Automatically opens your default but I think, not tested it yet, you can set it up to preview in multi browsers.

Pretty cheap too at under $50.
