laptop - need suggestion - 11/27/2007 0:20:35
I am buying a laptop for my 5 year old this Christmas. (She has been saving for a year. She even sold some of her toys and other unwanted items she found to make some money to buy a laptop.)

Can you suggest a good laptop at a price around $700. She wants to be able to write letters, play learning games, and use graphic software to create her magazines and story books. We also want wireless.

We are also looking to buy a wireless all in one printer. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your help!

Call Mensa. I think a prodigy has escaped :)

Asus recently released a cheap PC called the "3ePC" that could be well worth a look

:) Very funny....
But I have been contemplating the same thing...
My 5 year old son is hammering away on his Dad's laptop and we think he needs his own...
It's amazing how many url's he reels off to anyone who's interested!!
We are looking at HP's and Acer's - in NZ$ we can get a basic laptop for about $800 which does wireless etc...
Kids are really amazing!!

Do you have any experience with Toshiba? I found some decent deals on Toshiba.

Hmmm... yup the one my son hammers is a Toshiba - Tecra ... it's lasted OK for the last 18 months... we even had a lightening strike which fried all the phone lines and the laptop power cable was the only thing that was affected... so yip seems pretty good.
Good luck :)

Personally I think desktops would be better suited for kids - portable can take a hiding

I went back and forth between a desktop and laptop. I picked laptop because that is the one I will take when I travel. Another reason why I don't want to spend a lot of money on it.

I found some possibilities. My question now, I read mixed reviews on vista. (I have xp on my laptop.) Do you like vista or would you stick with xp?

Most laptops do not have enough speed/hardware/horsepower to run Vista. Unless you're getting a top of the line laptop, and even then, I don't think I would get Vista for it. I run Vista on my desktop, which is nice, but for my laptop I'm sticking with XP.

HP is having some pretty good deals right now... make sure you check out reviews before you buy anything.

Here's a good laptop if you want a good cpu/video card: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Usage&v1=Entertainment&series_name=dv6500z_series

You may want to look into some sort of accidental damage protection for your warranty, especially if you plan to give this to a kid.

I spent a couple hours reading reviews...Time consuming, but a necessity. I am only going to allow her to work on the laptop when her dad or I are in the room. (She has her own desk right next to mine.) She also knows that using a laptop is a privilege, it can be taken away in a heart beat.

I will check into the accidental damage protection. This laptop will be traveling with us...

Thank you for the recommendations!

We have a very old HP laptop. They're OK if you get a good one but from choice I would go with a Dell or failing that an ASUS. I'm just not a fan of HP.

We have two Dell laptops and they've been fine if you can get a good price on one I'd go with that.

I ended up buying a Dell at the last minute. I paid less than what I was planning to pay so I was happy. And my daughter is happy to finally have her own laptop.

You still have a day to get in on this deal:

http://laptop.org/

It's designed for kids, even sized for them. If you take a look at the hardware and software specs it's fairly impressive. The cost is $400 and they send you one, then one to a child in a developing country.

It runs on Linux so she wouldn't be installing any Windows software on it... but it comes with educational and entertainment software, is built for collaboration on projects, etc.

Just one idea.

If you want a Windows 'puter I'd take a look at some of the Sony and Compaq machines that have been on sale recently. You can get a pretty slick unit for $700 these days.
