about .htaccess - 11/27/2007 23:09:50
I use Ipowerweb as my host and for the past few years everything has worked great in updating my web site on a daily basis. It was snap to enable the FrontPage Extensions and I never really had problems for years.

However, Ipower is now transitioning to an update version and it happened for me to today.

On the Ipower control panel, I notice that the FrontPage extensions are not enabled so I got to that feature and try to enable them. It then gives me this error message:
-------------
FrontPage cannot be enabled if you have any .htaccess files within your root web directory.
-------------
Now what do I do?

I really don't know what .htaccess is and I have never jacked with it before. I have just been publishing to my host server for years and it never has been a problem.

I have seen that file in the root directory. I thought I could just try to "publish" again and then remove it but now I cannot even publish because the FrontPage Extensions are not installed and I am unable to access my host server until it is enabled.

Ipower does have a feature to remove .htaccess but will that screw me up in any way?

I have tried to read up on .htaccess on this forum but I am really clueless to what it really does because I have never used it.

Any comments or insight would be appreciated.

If you have never messed with the .htaccess file you most probably have nothing in there.

Suggestion: save the existing .htaccess file and delete it from the server, and try again. I am using Ipowerweb for years. 4 domains, and never had any major issues. So far they did not convert my domains to the new Cpanel. I don't think there will be a big problem on my side. But than again, I am not using FP extensions.....

Jurgen, thanks for your suggestion.

However, .htaccess doesn't show up in the root directory of my local drive so I cannot delete it. I remember seeing it on the root directory of the Ipower server whenever I publish.

I will use their option to remove it but if I do that, then I won't get the chance to save it. However, I have no idea how it ever showed up there because I didn't put it there. One day, it was just there and I never thought twice about it.

I like Ipower so I hope this transition will be painless...

One more question. If I remove .htaccess, will I ever miss it or need it?

You should download the .ntaccess file first so you don't lose it, just in case. Guess you never did download it that's why it is not in your local drive. Alternatively, just rename the file within your cpanel, or Vdeck. This way you don't lose it and can put it back if you have to.

You can open this file with notepad. It's just an simple text file. Examine what it in there.

.htaccess files do control how the server should respond to you web site file. There are many things you can do with it. But this is a whole different subject.

Did you call customer support. They are pretty responsive lately. But I would suggest calling them in the morning. You can end up in india..... hehehehehe

Jurgen, I couldn't get the FrontPage extensions enabled so I went to bed last night.

This evening when I checked vdeck, it said that the FrontPage Extensions were now installed. So I tried to publish my web page and I got an error. There is not any way to publish it.

And the Ipower tech support sucks big green donkey cojones. I have been on hold since forever.

I called them two times today (in the morning and afternoon). Each time I was on hold for 30 minutes and then I had to hang up since I was at work.

Jurgen, now I have to say that I am so disappointed with Ipower. After years of great service, they now suck big green donkey cojones...

I have not been able to update my web site since Monday and their support has been total crap. It takes almost an hour waiting on the phone to talk to a real live person.

They run a ticket and then come back the next day with a stupid simple suggestion that doesn't do anything.

If they don't fix their crap in a day or two I am going to find another host server... Overall, their transition to vdeck 3.0 has royally sucked...

Sorry to hear that. I have not been thru this transition yet. But than again, I am not using FP and I am designing in code. I do not think that there will be big issues with my pages. Chances are that they are not supporting any FP extensions anymore. And I also believe that many other hosts will do the same in the future.

IMHO, you should dump the extensions and do your pages the way they should be done in the first place. And don't rely on any WYSIWYG programs.

Don't know what to say. Guess I have to wait until it is my turn. I will let you know when it is happening and what it did to me.
