It's the FONTS that are messing the formatting up! - 11/28/2007 9:46:39
Help!!!

ok, i have had issues with formatting with this EW product....

So i re built the entire website from scratch but still a few people were telling me that the text would overlap some areas...hmmm mostly everyone is ok but still a few.

I wasnt sure what it was from so yesterday i asked someone to go to www.davesulvetta.com from their computer. They did and there you go, you see they have vision problems and their text is a little larger then normal. It duplicated the problem.

So question is, is there any modifications i can do on all the pages that will format the font to stay were i put it? you know like EW promises???

Im thinking if there is just some HTML code that someone could share with me, i can put it on everypage and it will finally fix my issue...

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

The problem is because when the text expands in size you really want everything else to move with it to allow for that (otherwise you get the overlapping). You don't want to fix the font - you want to fix the layout so that it will allow the font to increase/decrease in size.

One of the main ways to achieve this is to not set specific heights on divs/tables whatever. If you don't set a specific height then they should usually be able to expand.

So I'd basically go through and remove the heights from the main chunks of your page and see if that helps.

No problem Dave - this isn't a simple thing to get to grips with - you're doing fine and you've got a basically good-looking site there. Come back to us with issues as they arise and we'll help you through them.

(Edit: see my next post) Just go through your code and where you see something like this:

<table style="width: 100%; height: 174px">

remove the height bit of that style rule and see how it goes. It may be that you'll need to add a bit more code if everything collapses in height too much - but don't worry, we can cross that bridge if we come to it.

RE: It's the FONTS that are messing the formatting up! - 11/29/2007 5:59:07
Me again.

Ok so I'll preface this by saying that I don't use EW so I don't know how you could implement the following - only that it is possible to do (hopefully someone who knows EW might offer advice).

Anyway - had an hour or so this morning so I started fiddling with your code, removing height etc but ran into a couple of problems because some of the rest of the code was a bit jumbled. So I started from scratch with a table-less layout and removed all the extra spans and styles and inline styling that EW threw in there (there's about half the code now!).

Table-less, cross-browser version of your site

And here's the stylesheet governing it: http://www.littleblueplane.com/test/style.css

The thing is - newer WYSIWYG editors like DW or EW might use CSS which is all nice and shiny BUT they use it in the same way that they used to use old fashioned font tags etc - inline and or in the document head. This defeats the whole purpose of it (which is having all the styling info in one place to make it easy for you to change stuff in one edit) and gums up the page with too much "stuff" which, legend says, Google doesn't like much (it only reads a certain amount of the page apparently so you don't want it all taken up with spans and styling!).

I'll give you an example. I've put the contact details just below the banner image in a div with a class of box2. Currently the font-size is 130%. If you wanted to increase or decrease that across your whole site you'd just go into the stylesheet - find the applicable rule and change it - it changes globally across the site! Much quicker than having to go in and change it on every page.

The other thing that irritates me is that when you want to add a rule, EW etc tends to call it style47 or somesuch - which doesn't tell you very much!! Much better to call a class or an id something useful like - sidebar or centred for example.

Soooo - I've removed the presentational info and all the styles in the head and built a cleaner (apart from the flash thingy) more valid layout which will expand and contract with the text size and works cross-browser. There's a simple stylesheet which you can add rules to as you need.

This will leave you with a template that you can re-use across your site that looks like this:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

Wow...!!!!
Thank you! So basically, everything is left in the coding (keywords, google tracking etc.) and what you did was "tabless" coding?

Even the bottom hyperlinks are working! i never got to them, but it was a chore for this weekend...thank you for your help! I will copy the code and re-do my entire site!

Dave:)

Save what you've got already in case you run into problems using my layout.

My layout doesn't use any tables for layout - just divs plus I rarely ever use absolute positioning for positioning chunks of the page as you tend to end up with problems (like certain bits of the page not moving when everything else does!).

All the content is where it was plus the Google and ads etc - I just removed the tables and all the spans and formatting stuff - everything else is as it should be (far as I know!).

i think you have that main banner resized ever so slightly as the text looks a little 'browser-resampled' ;) maybe a pixel or 2 out?

dave if you want it optimising a little more and want to send me the original i can squeeze it down a bit for you. i'll leave Helena to do all the brainy thinking on the layout :)
