Need a New Host Server - 12/1/2007 16:24:33
I have been using FrontPage 2002 for years and I have been publishing on IPowerWeb during that whole time.

As someone who is not a programmer, I think I have done fairly well in the few years updating almost every day. So in other words, I guess I hate change.

However, IPowerWeb has bent me over and given me the big chorizo. The transition to their new platform really sucks big green donkey cojones. It was a huge hassle to adapt to the changes in which they did not explicitly tell people what changed. Next, the tech support people on the phone gave me lots of incorrect information on what to fix. It took another tech support to give me the right info that properly fixed a few things.

I finally got my web page updated today but the new IPower platform is still buggy and I get "time out" errors and other server errors. It is like it takes me ten tries to before I can properly publish it.

It bugs me that in the past few years I rarely had any problems and I could easily publish with FrontPage 2002 with a click of a button. Now, it is such a big pain in the [EXPLETIVE DELETED].

As a result, I need to look for a new host server and one that still respects FrontPage users.

I know that somewhere down the road I need to dump FrontPage 2002. It sucks because for the past few years, it has worked fine and I feel that if it is not broken, then I shouldn't try to fix it.

Anyway, any suggestions or comments on where I can go would much be appreciated.

To be on the safe side, while you need FPSE, I would suggest you look for a Windows host. A number of Unix hosts have dropped support and I suspect, as they migrate to PHP5 many more will drop it as well (partly because their tech guys have not got a clue).

I don't use Windows hosts so I can't recommend one but I'm sure someone will be along who can.

How does linux/windows make a difference for FPSE hosting?

Chances are you picked IPowerWeb because of their low price, this was your mistake. You get what you pay for with hosting. Most of the cheap hosts with incredibly low prices, are horrible. I've had a client that used Tom's hosting, and when I had to contact them, they replied pretty quick. I know another person that just signed up with him, and he seems happy too.

You are absolutely correct that I picked IPower for the low price. It was ridiculously cheap, like $29.95 every three months. And there is nothing wrong with that as long as it fulfills your goals.

For that low price, it worked flawlessly. I updated almost every day for the past three years and I rarely had any problems. The daily pageviews I had when I first started out was very low but they gradually increased. Today, they are so much better with a bigger audience but not at the level that I need to upgrade to better performance.

However, today I got really screwed. After getting my first update published in almost a week, the extensions were now gone. I tried to enable them but to no avail. And this last tech support suggested that I completely delete every file and then enable the extensions. I did that but that still didn't work.

Now I am upset. They are still advertising that they support FrontPage and instead of having a broken web site, I don't have anything at all because it is all deleted and I have this tech support person insinuating that it is my fault for still using FrontPage. And the only advanced technician that worked on my ticket is gone for the weekend and nobody else can work on it.

I still want cheap hosts because I am not doing anything yet with a huge audience.

But now I have another question. Since FrontPage is getting flushed down the toilet, what should I use next? Is Expressions really the solution for someone like me who is not a programmer?

EW is very different to FP and there's a learning curve as well as extra cost. It all depends on you and your site and what you intend to do, where you intend to go, with it. If it's a hobby that you may get bored with and not bother to update then stick where you are. FP has been replaced with EW and MS have stopped support but that doesn't mean FP has stopped working.

At the moment your site needs FPSEs. Some hosts have withdrawn them but not all. Windows hosts are more likely to keep providing them than Unix hosts. However, it's not a disaster if the FPSEs vanish altogether.

There are alternatives to all the bells and whistles that require FPSEs. You just need to learn how to use them to replace what you have and then you can use any host you want. However, the changeover won't be quick so pick a host with FPSE, get the site running, then spend time killing off all the FP type bots.
