ebook distribution method - 12/4/2007 9:35:03
I've often wondered why Adobe didn't make something like this available a long time ago... This looks promising for anyone interested in distributing commercial ebooks / articles securely. Secure - Ebook. Note: The link includes my affilliate ID.

Do you have an example e-book I could see that is protected?

The pdf is converts over to an exe file. Risk is too high for exe files, especially something that can be delivered via a pdf file.

I agree with you to a certain extent; i.e., there's always some uncertainty associated with downloading and opening EXE files. At the same time, to the best of my knowledge, this seems like one of the more economic ways of distributing protected PDFs. Also, I think people are more open to and experienced with downloads given all the content flying around the internet. I am hoping this company has some stickiness to it. Aside from simply posting them to a website, are you aware of a better way of distributing protected PDFs?

Do you have an activation key I can use to see it in full without restrictions? PDFs were designed with no protection in mind. It's like asking to protect an image. There is nothing you can do to protect your PDF/image, however, there are things you can do to make it harder. You can embed PDFs in flash, and have it prompt for a user/pass code in order for the information to display. It will require flash, as well as an internet connection, and it will also may not allow you to print the PDF. The eBook you linked me to, allows me to save a copy of all the content that is displayed. The only thing I don't have access to, are the pages that need to be activated in order to be seen. Once they are activated, I will still be able to copy it. I could still buy it, copy it, and then distribute it. The tool you use, makes it harder, but not impossible. If you can provide me with an activation key, I'll show you what I mean.

Although it might be convenient, the service doesn't offer a way to obtain a free access key - last time I checked. I'm not surprised there is a way to copy pretty much anything that is available online. One of the factors to take into consideration though is that if you've paid for it, you have a pretty good sense that the product you're obtaining has retained its original integrity. That can be more important in some cases than in others.

The service makes it very easy to sell eBooks online, but I wouldn't use the service for the "security" factor it advertises. All you need is a paypal account, and website. You don't have to worry about a shopping cart at all, since that company takes care of it all. I wouldn't use that company for the security of eBooks, but instead would use it for the simplicity of the entire process, and the little overhead required to sell eBooks.
