Tailslide -> Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 13:06:54)

Here's a nice neat solution to the age-old problem of how to markup the logo on a page:

Linky

I tend to use an image replacement method in conjuction with the H1 tag which works ok but semantically the H1 tag should really be the heading for the page not the heading for the site.

jaybee -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 14:55:46)

Mmmmm need to think about this. On first look it seems a great way to do it but I have a niggling doubt that I can't put my finger on right now.

d a v e -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 15:02:14)

what if your logo is part of your header that pretty much has to be a background image in a flexible layout?
e.g. like http://chargercomposites.com/sailing/index.html ?

anyway you can still put a link on the header div.

i can't see much point in it myself ;)

Tailslide -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 15:06:29)

Personally I prefer to have the logo clickable rather than a background image so the logo would be part of the markup rather than the CSS.

jaybee -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 15:26:29)

There's no reason that has to be a background image. The background could be a background and the main logo laid on top and clickable.

With all designs there are ways round it.

Rangler -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 15:57:54)

You wouldn't link images if you see what ZoneAlarm will do with ad blocker turned on.

Tailslide -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 16:33:29)

It blocks linked images from the same site or just from other sites? I find it incredible that it would block linked images from within the same site!?!

If that's true then Zone Alarm is, as I have long suspected, complete crap. It means almost every nav bar on the web gets blocked as almost every one of them is a linked image.

Rangler -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 16:52:10)

I found it blocks images linked within the site and images with links going outside the site. Seems to mainly block external links but I've found it blocks internal ones consistently with certain words on the image like "sale", "discount", etc.

Nasty creature. I no longer use images for any links. Only use text with a background image like Jaybee said.

Even though many users of it may not have the ad blocker turned on, one unhappy client is one too many.

It also has a setting where you can completely block out any reference to an image like [Ad] isn't even there.

Sort of -----> Invisible <--------. You would be surprised at the number of high profile sites that are strewed with [Ad] .

Norton apparently used to do the same thing but they changed.

Tailslide -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 16:55:10)

Yes certainly it's renowned for blocking images with certain names (like banner for instance) and ones of certain sizes whatever they're called.

However it's unrealistic not to have at least some image links on many sites. Even given that people do certainly expect a logo to take them back to the homepage - sort of become a standard.

jaybee -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 16:59:39)

However, I think you'll find you're wrong. Zone Alarm's Banner Ad blocker works by blocking linked images delivered by a different server, not those served by the site host UNLESS they are obviously ads.

Rangler -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 17:17:08)

Hate to tell you Jaybee but you are the one that is wrong.

I had an image titled "Military Discounts" in my nav menu that was linked within my site served from my server and it was blocked.

You may consider ZoneAlarm crap but it is out there so either ignore it or deal with it.

Just posted to inform people.

jaybee -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 17:33:26)

The info I gave was a quote taken from an email from the Tech guys at Zone Alarm. I'll email them back and tell them they're wrong.

jaybee -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 17:45:53)

And... they said......

Discounts is an ad trigger word, as is sale, price, buy and all the other obvious ones.

Rangler -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 18:21:30)

That will be nice to send them an email..

Make sure you tell them that the link went to a page with links where our soldiers can get discounts on admissions to amusement parks, museums, apartment rentals, bus tickets, orchestra performances, etc. Please mention that that I don't get a single penny out of it. All my time and server space is dedicated free of charge to a local USO to better serve out troops. May not be the most pretty or correct site code wise but they appreciate it and I don't have any [Ad] things coming up on the site anymore.

Also, could you please post your correspondence with them so myself and others can view exactly what they have to say?

Could be interesting. I would really like to see the original quote so I can file it for reference.

Next time you see a soldier, be sure to thank him or her for their service!

Also, why don't you change you signature file to like Tailside has so my ZoneAlarm crap doesn't have to look at you [Ad]?

Have a nice day [:)] and awaiting your correspondence post.

jaybee -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 18:35:56)

What on earth......

It doesn't matter whether it's a site for soldiers or anyone else, deserving or not. I'm sure you put a lot of unpaid effort in and that's commendable but the fact is, your image was blocked because it contained the word Discounts. If you had just called it military or mildiscs or puddings then it would have got through.

The ad blocker blocks linked images served by your own host if those images use names that are in their ad block list.

Rangler -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/8/2007 19:15:28)

Solved the problem by getting rid of the image so I'm happy and the soldiers are happy.

They have a link that says "Military Discounts" which they understand.

Where is the correspondence between you and ZoneAlarm?

Still would like to see it.

d a v e -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/9/2007 2:35:44)

"There's no reason that has to be a background image. The background could be a background and the main logo laid on top and clickable." hmm depends a bit on the background as how to well you can anti-alias your logo on say a gradient background or photographic background - certainly possible but probably not as good.

Probably in Jaybee's private inbox, which tends to be where private correspondence between two people tends to be. Perhaps if you're that interested in finding out your why your Zone Alarm crap doesn't do what you want it to, despite having already been told the answer, you might consider contacting Zone Alarm yourself.

The only doubt that springs to mind with me using the list method is that usually I have a 'home' link in my main nav as well as the nice clickable "take me back home" logo. The article's method of dealing with it is to move the "logo" id to the <li> element and absolutely position it, which is fair enough, but doing that obviously takes your "home" link out of your main nav visually, which for those of us and our clients used to seeing a "home" link in the navigation would mean putting an extra home link back in to main nav, which is just about the same as using a <h1> and then main nav. Wouldn't using two "home" links in the nice semantic list negate the usefulness of using a semantic list in the first place?

Personally I'd probably put a link on the header div as Dave suggested if I was using a flexible layout, but mostly I tend to stick with putting the link on a <h1> and using image replacement. On my personal site I did try sticking a link on the logo, but as Dave recently pointed out, it is rather badly anti-aliased (and still on my "to-do list" of things to be fixed [;)]). The last couple of sites I've done though haven't had a logo as such, and have just had a link on the site name.

d a v e -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/9/2007 6:05:12)

if you want some help with the logo womble and can give me the original you can pm me ;)

womble -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/9/2007 7:30:14)

Thanks Dave, I might just do that. [:)] All rather chaotic here what with that "C" word looming and finding out last week I'm off for a stay in the hospital again in a couple of days time. [&o]

d a v e -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/9/2007 8:53:49)

hope you don't have to stay in too long? surely not over the crimble time!

womble -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/10/2007 20:07:47)

Hopefully not, but I'm going to be in for my birthday, which is a bit of a PITA. Fingers crossed and all that I should hopefully be out just in time for the festivities, though what sort of state I'll be in when I get out is anyone's guess.

9 hours to go (got to be there for 10 o'clock in the morning), so I guess I'd better go to bed...[&o]

Took your advice and contacted ZoneAlarm and pointed them to this forum link.

BTW, Why do you consider ZoneAlarm crap?

caz -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/11/2007 12:46:59)

Womble went into hospital this morning so you will have to be patient for her reply. Did ZA answer your question?

Rangler -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/11/2007 15:19:31)

They did reply and have the link to the forum.

Hopefully, all will be well with her.

In the mean time, maybe jaybee can explain why ZoneAlarm is crap seeing that jaybee has moderator status with more then 12,000 posts and makes statements like:

"If that's true then Zone Alarm is, as I have long suspected, complete crap."

Myself and the folks at ZoneAlarm would like to be enlightened along with others.

Always willing to learn.

My suspicions about Zone Alarm stem from having used it, several versions ago, when it caused no end of problems on my machine to the point that I pretty much had to do a complete re-install. I have never installed it since. I am however aware that it has moved on since then and may well be a decent product by now but I am loathe to try it again and, until somebody proves to me its quality, the jury is still out as far as I'm concerned.

Now as far as me saying that ZA is crap...... perhaps you would like to re-read what I said in the context of where I said it. In reply to your assertion that Zone Alarm blocks all linked images, I said, If that's true then Zone Alarm is, as I have long suspected, complete crap but what you said wasn't true, it doesn't block all linked images so from where I stand the jury is still out.

If JC, Jordy or anyone else from ZA does land here please feel free to explain how the filtering works as there is obviously some confusion amongst the general population about linked images and it seems the info needs to come straight from the horse's mouth as no matter what I post it will be disputed.

jaybee -> RE: Semantic Logos (12/12/2007 17:01:08)

We don't know yet. She tends to play these trips down and says this one is pretty routine and nothing to worry about. This probably means she's just had a complete body transplant. [;)]
