Text HUGE on some computers - css problems - 12/11/2007 16:42:31
I've developed a site for a trailer manufacturer. The site looks good on my computer (17" MacBook Pro, screen resolution 1680 x 1050 on Firefox) and it looks okay on a Windows computer running IE 7.
But the client claims that when he pulls it up on some of this dealers sites when he's on the road, the body copy and/or the navigation text is HUGE. He's talking like 9 point text looks like 32 pt text. He is seeing it happen to the navigation links on the left side of the page and to most of the internal pages. He will browse other web sites on the same computer and they all appear okay.
I'm new to CSS so I'm sure there is something I've done wrong, but I cannot put my finger on it. Can someone please give me a site review - and if you have any idea as to what might be going on, I would be grateful!

You should see to the validation errors first then the problems may be solved.

In IE7, if you view the Trailers link, the text at the top for "Pro Series versus Advantage Series" needs to be moved down a bit. It gets cut off a tiny bit, enough to stand out.
As far as your problem goes... Ask your client if he sees the same thing in the uploaded screenshot. If so, try changing your %s (em) for the fonts to fixed values, then have your client test it out (just do this for one page, so your client can compare the two versions). If you're worried about people not being able to read the text, you can add another css file that has larger font sizes.
The default font size that displays when I view the page is a tad small. I wouldn't be surprised if you receive some complaints regarding the small font size.
There are many computers that automatically have the font size set to Largest, or Larger type font, and anyone who uses em based fonts automatically suffer. Some of these computers ship default with this setting (usually widescreen laptops), other computers are locked down (to where you can't modify the view) with the font size set to something really uncommon. Most people may not even know that they need to adjust their computer in order to properly view your website.

I agree with Bobby - there's no particular reason why the text size should be very large in your coding - you're text-size is set to less than standard text-size (which would be 1em). As he says I think that maybe he's looking at it on a screen where the text-size has been increased and therefore it's larger (which is as it should be).
He doesn't seem to say that the layout is broken - just that the text looks large. If it was just the text-size being large (even increased in the browser) you'd expect it to have broken a fixed width site - very badly at that. So maybe he's looking at the site on a lower resolution on a wide screen (say 800px wide on a 17 inch screen). I've had a few clients recently who have wide screens but have them set up at the lowest resolution and it can certainly look ugly - but nothing's broken.
Get some screenshots to see exactly what happens.
