The $800 Business Computer - 12/11/2007 21:16:28
I just put together a computer for a client, and figured I would share the specs in case anyone else may be in the market for a custom built computer before Christmas. Power supply carries a 5 yr warranty, video card and ram are lifetime. Motherboard, CPU, Hard Drives, and Case, all have a 3 yr warranties. The CPU is the best bang for the buck right now. The motherboard is one of few strong boards with 3+ years warranty. The hard drives have great benchmarks, and the PSU is quality. The video card will be perfect for a light gamer, however, if you want to spend another $200 you will be able to turn this machine into a gaming rig. The hard drives run Raid 1, which provides data redundancy - if a hard drive ever dies, you can simply replace the dead drive, and all of your data will be kept in tact. The case may be overkill for most people, if you plan to have your computer displayed in an office, you may want to keep the stylish Antec P180. If you plan to hide the case, you can find something around $80 and save a bit. The PSU is modular, so you only need to connect the wires that you require. It also has 18A on the 12V rails - if you plan to connect quite a few components (5-8 hard drives, dual video cards, etc.) you may be better off with another PSU. CPU: INTEL Core 2 Duo E6750 - $189 Motherboard: Intel Desktop Board DP35DP - $112 RAM: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $49 Hard Drives: Raid 1 (2 x WD2500AAKS 250GB) - 2 x $70 = $140 Case: Antec P180 - $130 PSU: Corsair HX Series CMPSU-520HX 520W - $109 ($10 MIR) = $99 Video Card: BFG 6600GT Pci x16 - $60 Floppy Drive: NEC Black Floppy Drive - $12 CD/DVD Burner: LG GSA-H55NK - $33

OK this may be a dumb question but why don't you just have someone in the US buy it and ship it to you?

You'd think that with the very depressed US dollar, you guys across the pond could get better deals than us.....

If you need to add a monitor, I suggest the 22" widescreen ViewSonic, 5ms response, and a very nice 1000:1 contrast ratio for $230 shipped after $30 MIR. The Viewsonic monitor has quite a few good reviews. I'm a huge fan of Dell monitors (I have 2 19" ones right now that have held up strong), however, Dell monitors are priced too high compared to the competition right now.
