How to limit FTP access to only part of site - 12/12/2007 7:09:14
I've created a website for a recreation club. One club member wants to be able to publish some member sporting results to the club website. I want to limit their FTP access rights to just a part of the website - say to a particular folder or page. I don't want them to be able to see the file list(within the FTP program) or edit the other files sitting on the server. Is it possible? (Note that I'm not using FrontPage extensions for this site, so apologies if my question is not in the correct part of the forum.)

If you have access to the console of the server, you could set the Home Directory of an FTP site to that specific directory. It doesn't have to be the root.

Hope it help.

Thanks very much rdouglass for your suggestion.

I don't have direct access to the server console, though I might be able to get the hosting company to make changes.

I'm afraid that I'm not clear on how setting the Home Directory to the directory to be used by the clubmember would work in practice to achieve the result required.

Yes its possible.
When you create an FTP user, you'll have to specify the folder/directory. The FTP user will only be able to upload and browse within this folder.

You need to have access to a webhosting control panel in order to create the FTP user.

Thanks a lot William Lee for the confirmation. I'll talk to the webhosting company about whether they can do it for me via the hosting control panel!
