I'm not sure I understand this so be patient with me.

How do I point a record to public mail?

Are you talking about DNS records here? To point mail to a mail server, you'd use the "MX" record in the DNS configuration for your domain .vs using an "A" record for your web host.

That what you're looking for?

I believe I am talking about DNS records. A client has an in house server and the IT company that supports the server asked me to change A record to mail.domainname.com He told me I either make the change in control panel or have the host company make the change.

I went into control panel and found modify MX entry under the e-mail section. I selected modify mx entry and entered this information: mail.domainname.com

Did I do it right?

Not exactly sure to be honest; you tell me.

If you're sending people to a web-based mail system using browsers, then you *do* need to use the A record since in reality it's a web site.

If you're trying to get other mail servers to send mail to me@domainname.com, then you need to use the MX record.

Since they want the servers to excange mail, I suspect the admin 'misspoke' and in reality they want the MX record.

Does that help?

EDIT: Sometimes *both* are appropriate.

I think I understand now.

web based mail is accessed through a web browser.

The admin wants them to use outlook because their email accounts with road runner fill up fast due to large files they receive from clients and they can not save their e-mail on the server for backup purposes. Since I changed the MX entry, their email from road runner is now going to their e-mail box with the hosting company. When the client opens outlook, they do not receive e-mail. I was told by the client that the admin did not make any changes with their outlook e-mail account settings.

So now I am going to have everyone setup their e-mail account in outlook to make this work the way the admin intended it to work.

Will the e-mail be saved on the server and will they also be able to read their e-mail using outlook instead of logging into some control panel, etc.?

I talked to the admin yesterday to find out if he needed me to do anything else. He said no. The admin. did say he may have to call me back to have me modify MX. I have not heard from him since yesterday's conversation.

If you are working with the host admin, take his suggestions not mine. [:D]

Just remeber that you can setup OutLook to work with *both* POP-based mail (standard email protocols) and web-based mail so be sure you understand which proptocols he's asking for.

Thank you for your help today. I believe I have a better understanding of this and hopefully will be able to understand what the admin wants me to do.
