dbguide -> new ** review my site and be ruff (12/14/2007 2:44:17)

I am going to post another site I made and I posted on another forum .... I am getting a lot of shit about it but they are snobby are pick at my lack of technical proficiency which I do lack

so I thought why not let you guys have a go www.clearskinguide.net

I think its clean and simple and to the point, no mess no stress

other designers say its amateurish and simple and technically unsound with lots of graphic errors

I want to know what you guys think

yeeehaw

Aaaaaaargh!!!!My eyes! My eyes!

[:D] Is that the sort of thing you wanted?

OK, it may have loads of errors etc but it doesn't look too bad at all. A bit busy maybe.

My main comment there is that you go straight to that page. You need a front page or some explanation of what the site is about.

I think it looks fine - maybe the pale green in the banner is a bit bland but frankly *shrugs*

I agree with Jaybee that maybe a bit more explanation would be good but it looks fine - doesn't break badly when the text is increased.

Yes, technically it's not brilliant but it's ok. I can't check whether the tables linearise properly as my PC's exploded but you could check that yourself easily via Firefox web developer extension.

some of the product samples look a bit blurred - it's a bit tricky getting sharpness if you reduce a lot - what graphics package are you using?

otherwise looks ok. maybe the plae green could be a bit fresher yet still light?

oh no can you see anymore? I am sooo sorry [:-]

Umm I forgot to put in the doctype heheh, oh well I got paid for it so I guess I will get paid to fix it later [:-]

Yeah you are right ... it goes straight to the comparison page with out an explanation, but just type in acne in google and it seems that this technique works ... It seems no one wants an explanation just a comparison of products ... plus the click through rate is better, thus ROI is higher .. I have made similar stuff for this client in the past and the sites with intros do the worst on ROI (only 5 - 6 times) while the straight to comparison does significantly better (8-10 times ROI)

oh well and the world turns

yeah pale green is bland ... but the client wanted a color to mimic umm highend skin products so it was decided upon a color close to clinique's color

i hope my site didn't blow up your PC [:D]

Thanks for the feed back ... I guess now I know where the design of this site stands ... "just ok" I hope my skills can someday wow you guys *sigh* [:-]

Usability and accessibility is what floats our boat. Get those right along with your designs and you're on a winner. [;)]

I use photo shop elements (I got it free! woohoo!) ... I should be using CS3 but I am cheap and don't want to shell out $399.99

yeah I reduced to 10 - 15% thus its really blurred and the pic quality that I started with was low res as well.

really? its pretty nice on my monitor, but you are probably right ... a lot of colors on my monitor look better than other monitors...like all colors look totally different on my sony viao laptop than on my samsung widescreen

i used the coffecup color picker software (yes freeware) to get that green ... do you have any suggestions on a better color scheme generator?

d a v e -> RE: new ** review my site and be ruff (12/18/2007 5:04:35)

if you have unsharp mask in elements (or then at least sharpen if you haven't got that ) then reduce your original images to 50% or even 25% (if it's still large enough) then use unsharp mask (or sharpen) then reduce to the final size and use a little more unsharp mask (or sharpen) ;)

Thanks for the tip [:)]

tried it already but the image was like 72 dpi to begin with so didnt have much to work with and shrinking it to about 10 - 15% didnt help much with the masking function.

cheers! [:D]

There's a HUUUUUUGE long list of them in the "Outfront Discoveries" section of the forum - some of them have a bit of a review about what they're like to use as well, and most of them are free. (I've got a bit of a "thing" about colour scheming tools and when I'm bored go of wandering the web to find more colour loveliness [:D])

On balance, I have to agree about the green - it's looking a little bland on my laptop. Generally it's best to try and check out the design on as many monitors as you can get your hands on (asking friends and family if you can have a quick look at it on theirs is a good way to get access to more). If you're going to be doing a lot of work where it's important that your colour scheme combinations look just right, it may be worth splashing out on one of the screen calibration thingies.

As regards the design, personally I'd try and tie the colour scheme in with the graphics - there are a number of colour scheming tools on the list mentioned above that will generate a colour scheme based on an image. I'd also reduce the depth of that header area slightly - you've got a lot of "dead" area there that's taking up space and pushing the rest of the content down "below the fold", i.e. you have to scroll down to see it. Ideally you should have as much content as possible above the fold. With that in mind, personally I'd probably move the top ranked product to above the comparision chart, but that's just how I'd do it.
