SEO Help needed please. - 12/16/2007 21:44:06
Hi eveyone,

Im have made a website in and included the mata data tags, which are used by some search engines.

What i want todo now is have my website listed free in the majoy search engines like google, msn and yahoo.

But im abit confused how i go about this without having to pay money. Do i download a software? I'm not a business so i'm not looking to have my website listed in a Google Ad search.

People say websites can be listed free onto majoy search engines.. but howw?

If some body could help me i would be greatfull.

Kind Regards

Be greatful they are using your meta tags. Check out XML sitemaps for some information. Usually it is better to let the SEs find you through backlinks.

Hi Coreybryant,

Thanks alot for your relpy.

I've had a look at the link, its tells you to create a sitemap.

So does that mean if i create a site map using the software on their site and upload it to my server the search engines will pick my website out and it could be displayed on google?

What do you mean by backlinks? , a sitemap?..

sorry its the first time i'm doing any search engine work..im finding it all abit confusing.

cheers

What site are you referring to? There are several ways to create an XML sitemap. I use the GSiteCrawler to create mine. Very simple to use. There are others and of course if your site is not that big, simple enough to just create your own

Backlinks are basically a link on another website that points to yours. You can set up your signature on some forums to get them and there are hundreds of other ways.

A sitemap can have two meanings. One might be something like Sitemaps that I previously mentioned for the search engines. And example of another sitemap is useful to humans.

Thanks Coreybryant,

I'm starting to understand it abit better now.. I done a serach on google.. and found this link.

http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

basicaly like you said use a tool to create the XML sitemap.. then simple upload it to the server.. :)..?. I'm guessing thats wright.. and then submit you URL to google also.

Sounds simple enough

Don't expect to suddenly find your site top of the Google ranks or even on the first page.

If you by some miracle you do find it there, be prepared for it to disappear fairly quickly. Unless you are incredibly lucky and have a niche then it takes a lot of work, backlinks and longevity to get up the top and you can guarantee that any competitors that see you up there will do their darndest to fix their site to overtake yours.

Unless things have changed, month one Google will index but not list, then month 2 you may get listed but you may be on page 276 or something. It takes a while to get sorted out.

Basically yes. And hopefully you read that post on how to submit it to other search engines and add it to your robots.txt file as well.

As jaybee points out, it could take awhile. I have seen some sites get listed in a couple of weeks while some took as long as six months.

If you have a hot site linking to your site it shouldn't take more than a day or two to be indexed. As it has been said above - that doesn't mean your going to rank for any money terms, but at least Google knows your around.

A day or 2 to index the sitemap? Strange. I have a website that's been indexed for years on Google, but we just got a site map in early 2007. It's been almost a year, and the sitemap isn't indexed yet, even though it's regularly submitted on googlewebmaster.com Any advice? thanks, F

If you are indexed by google and the other engines there is no need to re submit again. The spider bots will come automatically every so often. This depends how regular you change your content. If you build a site and it's just sitting there with no changes for months there is no need for the bots to come back more frequently. It's indexed already.

Your sitemap is most probably indexed as well. Sitemaps can be used to make it easier on the search engines to find all the other pages of your site. If your menu/navigation structure is correct you don't even need a sitemap.

On a side note: you shouldn't submit to often it might come over as spamming. Some say 3-4 months in between.

edit:
I have just seen your site. You don't have a link to your sitemap. You better make one.

I have many sites that rock the search engines in competitive areas (100+ million results & $10 clicks)... I don't use the Google site map on any of them.

You just need a site that Google visits often... Send me a PM and I will see if I can get your sitemap noticed.
