Losing download speed every night - 12/16/2007 23:33:32
We're satellite internet...usually around 1000 down and 250 up...except every night starting around 8 pm when the download speed drops to below 50 (and the upload stays normal). Had a computer guru check our end out and she says no problems on our end. Satellite folks say plenty of bandwidth available. Everyone is stumped...we're out in the bush and not wifi'd, thus no bandwidth thief (plus I'd lose on the upload as well wouldn't I?). Ideas accepted...the wackier the better at this point...I've got to get people thinking outside the box on this one. Regards, Scotty

Are you in the far west of the country? I can't remember what the time difference is but could it just be when you get the eastern and central US kids logging online after having their dinners? Certainly for a lot of people in the UK things tend to get slow once the kids get home from school. Just a wild guess here!

Close all of your programs, and run the Speak Easy Speed Test during normal hours, and then during times when you normally see 50mbps. If you still see the same results, test it out on another computer (preferably a laptop hardwired to your modem/router), and see if that does the same thing.

Final update on this...The Network Operation Center (NOC)...could never figure out what the problem was...they kept trying to point the problem back to us...except when I did a conference call with a high priced computer tech sitting in. As luck would have it...along comes dsl to our remote outback in the Oregon coast mountains. Now I have to figure out how to sell a 4' dish and $3000 worth of equipment. Regards, Scotty

I always thought that sattelite was a dedicated bandwidth, but I've never used it so it could be similar to the cable scheme A bit of encouragement for Scotty - DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is just that. You'll experience no peaks and valleys - expect to get at or near the subscription speed you paid for 24/7.

I've got to get people thinking outside the box on this one. Is your virus checker scheduled to run at that time? I've seen systems that were somewhat fragmented drop to their knees during virus scans depending on the scanning options. Just a thought.
