frontPage publishing issues - 12/18/2007 11:13:52
Oh help …
I have been using a host for several in Qld. Australia. I have published the site for years using FrontPage with out a problem. Today it's not working. I get an error message - "500 internal server error Internal server error the server is temporarily unable to service you request due to key mismatch"
Their technician says “I believe there may be a serverwide issue relating to Front Page extensions Microsoft don’t actually support them anymore so they are on the way out.” They want me to use a different system to upload files, but publishing with FrontPage is so easy and convenient.
Is anyone else having problems publishing with FrontPage lately? Are there any suggestions?

Bec the bad news is that some hosts will stop supporting FPSEs as they are no longer fully supported by Microsoft. Frontpage is no longer supported by MS either. Expression Web is the replacement.

The good news is that some hosts do still have FPSEs and intend to keep them until it's no longer possible due to technical/security issues.

I suspect your host are trying to get you to use FTP instead. It's perfectly possible but you have to be careful what you upload. There are hidden files (such as _borders) that don't show up in FP but should show up if you look at the folder in Explore. They need to go up as well and FTP won't do that automatically.

The problem is going to be that if you have used some of the FP options that absolutely require FPSEs then you've had it and you'll need to replace the bot code with something else.

It's up to you. We can help you find replacement code for stuff or you can go find a host who continues to run FPSEs for now. Such as Thomas Brunt, owner of this forum, for example.

Thanks for your reply Jaybee. That is exactly what is happening. I keep on asking them what is happening, but they don't tell me that they have chose not to continue supporting FPSE. In fact they still promote using FPSE in their Welcome email!

I guess I have to learn to use a new system, and the old one was working so well for me.

I do use borders on some of my sites, I will watch out for that. I don't know about replacing Bot code though, sounds like it's getting all to complicated now.

And good-on-ya Thomas Brunt for continuing to support for now. I hope your clients appreciate it.

If you click that link I gave you above it takes you to another thread on here that lists all the things that use bots and need FPSEs. If you use any of those then they'll need to be replaced.

Your host may not have decided to stop support, it may have been forced on them due to an upgrade of something else which doesn't want to play ball with the FPSEs. I suspect they may be looking at a fix but having contacted MS or done a web search, got no support and are now completely lost. Not all these host support guys know everything about everything. Some know nothing about everything as I've recently discovered but in this case I think it sounds like they've reached the end of the line and given up.

Unless sites that need FPSE are a huge part of their business they will just let them go. Most of Tom's clients use FPSE which is why he's hanging on.
