Changing Servers - 12/5/2001 18:52:01
Hello, yes a dreaded server change, only this time to my own dedicated baby, no more aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh, hopefully... !

Problem I'm facing is that I already have 8 sites I'm administering that are currently live on another server and obviously other dns information and IP, so...., I do not want any downtime otherwise these boys are going to skin me alive....; question is, how do I move the webs over to the new server using FP without the dns info having been activated for that server ??? I can move everything using ftp or telnet, but that would screw up all the extensions, is there any way of doing it without saying www.blablabla.com when uploading, could one perhaps upload using IP .... say htpp://216.501.45.56:lickmyear/ or something ? :)

Okay folks, hope someone can help me, this is not a life threatening problem but if someone has any info, I'd gladly swap my new 501's for a little bit of Christmas wisdom.

Love

Piece of Cake!

Do you have control of the DNS zones? or atleast a dns zone. You'll want to use host headers on the new server. setup the dns, etc on the new server, setup the webservers and add temporary urls like client1.mydomain.com, client2.mydomain.com etc you can then publish via frontpage to the new server via http://client1.mydomain.com, test everything out using that url and then edit the DNS zones and point them at the new ips.

Hey Jes, sounds like you know your DNS system. I've been working out a couple of issues that I think involve DNS. can U take a look?
