Winxmaster -> Hyperlink SEO Trouble (12/20/2007 20:52:46)

I am just making my first website and I planed to use a white page background with a table with a coloerd cell in it that would contain my navagation hyperlinks.

First I was going to use white text for my hyperlinks because of overall page design but I was told that this would be seen as spaming by the search engines (white text on white background). To get around this I created a gif of a bule background with white text and made the text hyperlink hot spots. They both look just the same but now I have just heard that the spiders have a hard time with image maps too.[:o]

Is this true? If it is how do I work around it?

Thanks in advance.

????? Confused.... ????

Why would you make white links on a white background. Nobody can see the links.... ?????

And yes, maps and hot spots are not a good way to go for SE purposes.... ????

Still confused....

Usually yes - if humans can't see it - why would you want it? You are creating a webpage for humans to see / read, not search engines to maybe follow links. Use an XML Sitemap for that

I may be misreading this, and sorry if I am, but:

What exactly are these hyperlinks? Are they your navigation or links to other sites?

i think they mean that because their links are white and the PAGE background is white google may see it as spamming/stuffing (whatever) but if you colour the table cell that's not white text against a white (CELL) background

Winxmaster -> RE: Hyperlink SEO Trouble (12/21/2007 21:38:44)

Sorry for any confusion.

The Page background is set as white with a table on it for layout. I was going to make a cell background of the table dark blue and put white text on the dark blue cell background. This way human viewers will see white hyperlinks in a dark blue rectangle on the left side of the page.

But, I was told that if my white page background matched my white text color that the spiders will ignore the color of the cell background, no matter what it is, and just see white text on a white page and not like it.

I saw that information in the "FrontPage" section of outback in an article about making your site friendly to search engines. It went as follows:

Creating Search Engine Friendly Pages
by Katherine Nolan

Don't Use Hidden Text

Using text the same color as the background, really tiny text or any other means of hiding text will get you banned or reduce your ranking.

"I never would!"

Are you sure? It is an easy mistake to make. If your page uses a cell with a dark colored background containing white text, unless your page background is set to a color other than white the search engines will see a problem.

Is this info correct?

The links are to other areas of my site, (which is not yet on-line)

Thank you all[:)]

I think that article was written some considerable time ago and things have moved on a bit. You may get in trouble if your links are not visible, ie, white text directly onto a white background but I'd be surprised if that's the case with an overlaid cell. If you're worried about it then change your background to off white or cream often looks nice with dark blue.
