HTTPD.conf not found? - 12/23/2007 23:40:23
Hi all I've been struggling for the last couple of months with my Web Hosting service over an issue with my FrontPage sites. It seems that they are totally at a loss as to how to overcome an issue I have with logging in using FrontPage to manage my site. The error is this: --------------------------- Microsoft Office FrontPage --------------------------- Server error: The server extensions were unable to access the file "httpd.conf". Please check the file permissions. Contact your Internet service provider or Web server administrator for more information. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- In the past, I've reported the issue and after a brief period they would report back to try again. This time, however, it's painful. They are now trying to tell me that Microsoft no longer supports FrontPage so as a result they are unable to resolve this. Can anyone shed some light? Are they trying to BS me or what? In case it helps, here is the last reply from them: The reasons for the issues with FrontPage is that it's no longer supported or sold by Microsoft. Which means they've stopped fixing bugs and supplying security updates, and now cPanel have stopped supporting it aswell (which means if we have any issues, we're completely on our own). If you look around the net you will find nearly all web designs and web hosts suggesting others to stop using FrontPage and to move on to other alternatives. Of course it is your own preference, but it is not recommended to stay using FrontPage. Cheers... Rick :)

Hi Jaybee Thanks for the info. Admittedly, I'm at a bit of a loss to determine what (if anything) might be using the extensions. Is there a list of functionality offered by the extensions so that one might easily determine what functionality may be lost? I currently have three web sites. All three are hosted by the same company. One of the three I'm still able to open and manage using FrontPage. The other two have issues. Only on my latest site am I using anything I might deem remotely connected to the extensions. I based the site off a FrontPage template I acquired from OutFront. It has includes for navigation. ShowMeSolutions.biz Thanks for any info... Rick :)

Includes should be fine, they don't need FPSE and this list gives a run down of other things that you may need to check, http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-96938/tm.htm

Hi there :) I have two Web Hotels, and I DO have this "httpd.conf" file error as well... What is so STRANGE (!) though is that this error "only" happens at the Main Accounts; NOT on any Subdomain NOR ony any other Accounts that I have created myself... In case I get the question: Where is that "httpd.conf" file located? Is it eventually possible to copy that file from an Account that works, to the Web Hotel Account? As it occurs for every Account that file, it must be a place where I as a user cannot see it - right? With best regards Jan Guldvog
