nmarlee -> frontpage issues (12/30/2007 11:17:53)

Anyone care to throw a non computer person a life raft?

Let me start with I have never read anything on "how to" do anything in frontpage, I am more a trial and error type of person. (Yep disastor ahead)

I have just finished my site, still needs a few tweaks but for the most part it's done. I love my site however I can not get it to pull up at all in the search engines. I think I named the pages well but again what do I know.

I have tried to add doctype and it doesn't seem to want to "take" it shows up on the website and doesn't do anything. I've tried to add metatags and again the same problem shows up. I've made an effort to resolve the issues looking in the archives but couldn't get it to work. I'm sure it was operator error.

I have learned the error of my ways and will be ordering "Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML, CSS, Graphics, and Beyond " later today but any help in the mean time would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Outfront.

I initially thought you meant you couldn't get the site to load, then I read your post again.

Search Engines. You mean you can't find it in Google?

You won't. The site needs a lot of work on search terms and even then Google won't touch you for at the absolute least, one month. Then it might not show up for months after that and even then, could be down on page 200.

You need to read up on Search Engine Optimisation.

Backlinks, search terms, site submission, backlinks....

You could start by putting in two meta tags you're missing, Description and keywords.

Then you can go to Google webmaster tools, sign up and set yourself up an xml sitemap which will get Google to take some notice.

A lot of the results will depend on good content, backlinks and the length of time your site is in existence.

Crud, I was thinking it wouldn't be a magic wand type of thing. Thanks for the info. Boy really wish I would have done this sooner as the website has been up for over two years. (I just redid the "look" in the last couple months.)

Guess I'll settle in for lot of intense reading. Any good books to curl up with?

MMMMMMM lemme think. This is a huge subject so you might be just as well Googling for SEO or search engine optimisation.

The problem with books is they don't get updayed and the Engines change what they do and how on a regular basis.

I'll see if I can find a decent web tutorial.

Here you go, have a look at some of these, but before diving in, make sure what you're doing is pretty much agreed on between most sites. Some people out there have some very odd ideas that might get you blacklisted.
