Stuka -> Image Composer 1.5, why does it show splotchy dark colors ? (12/30/2007 12:53:21)

Hi, after several Google searches I found this forum has (had) some Image Composer users. I still use this program, it is really easy and intuitive, uses layers, provides VERY easy resizes and superior cutout tools, and it does everything I want. The ONLY real issue I have with it, is it frequently has problems with dark colors.

Here is an example of two images, one on the web, and the other is the same pic opened in Image Composer.

Image Composer 1.5 problem with dark colors
Original image from the web, note the smooth dark color transition from the front of the sub to the middle,

Same image saved and opened in Image Composer.
Note the splotchy dark colors, why does it do this?

I have tried using different palettes (seletion, solid, dithered, etc). But this one flaw keeps causing me problems> [:(] I'm hoping someone will point out something I need to reset or do to fix this. I cannot find similar issues with IC posted anywhere on the web, so it must be me. Help!

thanks

it looks like you're saving again as a jpeg?? from what - an original jpeg? (i see that the attached screenshots are jpeg but that doesn't necessarily mean that the images are ;)

looks like you've increased the contrast in the image too can bring out some of the loss of detail in the first image, compounded by further compression.

try using a higher quality/less compression when you save/export in IC.

looking to the right of the right hand side yellow circled area you can see those blocky jpeg comrpession artefacts due too much compression (and amplified by the fact that you're saving a jpeg from an original compressed jpeg)

hi Dave, thanks for the speedy reply!

The bottom image, that is what the top image looks like when I copy and paste the top image into IC (minus the yellow circles, of course). In other words, the splotchy effect and the compression artifacts appear immediately when I open IC and paste the top image in; or when I open IC and then File, Open the image.

If you right click the top image and paste into IC, does it appear as the original?

strange - unfortunately i've never used image composer, i thought you were already saving or exporting from it...
it seems strange that the image when opened in IC looks so different - more compression artefacts and the sea and sea surface look like they have had their contrast/levels altered.

sorry i can't help much!

So this isn't originally your image? Are you taking it from the web? It could be that the site has some sort of compression algorithm on the pictures to stop copying.

Other than that, I'm not familiar with Image Composer but normally when you open a new file in a graphics package it pops a dialog box to allow you to choose the size, compression etc. Make sure that's set to the highest ratio and see if that helps.

If you don't get the dialog and are just pasting straight in I expect it's compressing. Try File>New then choose the best settings, set the size, OK it and then paste into the empty box.

If you are taking off the web make sure you have permission to use the image.

Thanks, yes, it is my image, I have it posted on our website. I'm just using it as an example of the problem. We review submarine games and often when I open a screenshot I have taken, this is how it looks in Image Composer. I have been trying what you suggest, finding the New Image settings, but they don't seem to have any compression settings. That does occur when I try to save an image...

I guess there aren't many people using IC these days, which is understandable. I use it and it does 99% of what I need. If I could just figure out why it breaks dark colors...occasionally.

What drew me to this nice forum is a search result that brought up this thread

I see abbeyvet has not been active here, too bad, she sounds like an experienced IC user. If anyone here uses IC and you have any ideas, thanks!

Abbeyvet is a very busy lady these days and rarely around. The only thing I can suggest if you're doing regular graphics is to shell out for Photoshop Elements (not the full blown Photoshop) it does pretty much anything I need with photos and the Save for Web option is truly amazing.

Failing that, Paint Shop Pro is reasonably priced or, if you have time to play go get the Open Source Freebie... The Gimp.

Sometimes you just have to accept that your warm and snuggly familiar package just doesn't cut it any more. Things move on.

Ooooh final though on IC, it only happens sometimes> Memory

Make sure there aren't too many things open all at once.
Make sure there's plenty of free space on your hard drive for Windows and IC to work in. Delete old stuff and defrag if not.
