Should I upgrade from FP 2002 to FP 2003? - 12/31/2007 15:37:11
I've been using FrontPage 2002 on my Windows 98 machine since 2005 to create and design my photography website, http://www.lanimilbus.com. Now I'm finally upgrading to a new computer, and since I no longer have the original FrontPage 2002 CD I'm going to have to buy it again to be able to install it on my new computer. My question is, should I just buy FrontPage 2003 instead? I really don't know much about it, other than it's more recent than FP 2002. So could someone give me some details about it, particularly how it differs from FP 2002 and if it's better or worse? I know that with Microsoft products newer definitely does not always mean better, and many of the reviews of it on amazon.com are overwhelmingly negative, so I'm not sure. Anyway, thanks in advance for any help.

Here's my take on it for what it's worth.

Dreamweaver developers and others hate FP so ignore the comments on Amazon.

FP2003 is much better than 2002, in fact, when I got 2002 it caused me so many problems that I went back to the previous version until 2003 was released.

Now. You're getting a new machine should you get 2003. No.

Frontpage is no longer supported by Microsoft. It's been replaced with Expression Web. If you're going to start from scratch go with the latest thing and start learning to set your sites up with up to date development methods.

If the new system is going to have Windows Vista, consider Expression Web. Too many complaints re: FP 2003 and Vista unfortunately.

Alec,

All of the FrontPage Themes, components/extensions (such as forms, guestbook, etc..), are not available in Expression Web. If you rely on this functionality to build your website, you will be extremely disappointed in expression web. It does however have backwards compatibility, that enables certain extensions if you open a site that uses them.

Although MS has officially stopped "supporting" FrontPage, many web hosts will continue to support them until there becomes a security issue. Some hosts have dropped them because they are a pain in the butt, but there are plenty that still offer support. MS dropping support for FP isn't the same as when they drop support for an OS. Usually the OS will have daily/weekly updates, the FPSE are OLD, and are hardly ever updated anyways.

So it's really up to you. Someday you will have to move on, knowing that, do you want to take the steps now? Or later?

FP 03 is going for around $80-$140 on eBay. If you rather not spend the money, FP 02 should be fine (i'm not sure how any of these would run on Vista though). If it was me, I would upgrade to FP 03, as it is much better software.

Or if you really want to go out on a limb... stop relying on the Frontpage components.

You may just find that everything Frontpage does for you is fairly simple to do in other ways... but without being tied to FP extensions and other limitations of Frontpage.

I agree that 03 was head and shoulders above 02... but after about six months on 03 I realized that I could hand code or recycle code to achieve the same things using CSS, Includes, etc. The "pure" alternatives are more powerful, have far more flexibility, and you can create them with notepad and a free FTP client.

If you want my advice (and nobody said that you did) ditch your WYSISYG editor for old-school. I started using a notepad clone about three years ago and have never looked back since. I'm not a genius, not a professional. I'm just a guy who likes to build websites.

It really doesn't take as much time or effort as you might imagine to get along without a WYSIWYG editor.

;)

wheres my beer...?

He doesn't have the disks for 2002 so whatever happens he has to go and buy something.

- You can use someone else's disk, and your current serial number. It would save $100+, well worth it if you plan to just stick with what you have.

I'm going to be getting XP on the new machine because of all the bad things I've heard about Vista, so compatibility shouldn't be an issue. I've considered completely switching over to Dreamweaver or Expression Web, but from what I've heard I would have to completely re-do my website from scratch if I began using them because they don't work the same way as FP and can't create new pages that would look/act the same as the pre-existing pages on the site that were built with Frontpage.
Anyway, I would get Expression Web if it weren't for that reason. Does Frontpage 2003 act essentially the same as 2002, or is it like a completely different program?

I don't remember 2003 being that much different to be honest. Except it worked better.

You will be able to work with your site in Expression Web as long as you haven't used too many of the bots and even then, as long as you don't want to change them there's no problem.

What you really need to consider is - you're intending switching from an 8 year old unsupported package to a 5 year old unsupported package. How vital is your web site? If the FPSEs were dropped tomorrow what would you do? Do you need to make sure now that your site will still be working in 2, 3, 4 years time? If so, I would honestly recommend starting to learn a new package now and get your site futureproof at a leisurely pace rather than having to panic when it suddenly stops working.
