Hi All

My site has been up and running for around 6 months. In that time I haven't sold a single print! I have statistics that show people are visiting the site but I am not sure if I have maximised the SEO? In the last 3 weeks my stats tell me that only 10 visits to the site were referred by search engines where people used keywords (9 Google, 1 Yahoo). The other sessions where largely Google Image searches.

I even reduced the prices of the prints significantly 4 weeks ago as an experiment to see if that would have an effect but to no avail.

Here is the link to the site:

Any ideas folks?

Thanks & Rgs

Craig

Yes, a lot. Nice site by the way.

You need to work out what people are likely to be using to search for your site then optimise everything for that.

So for example https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal says watercolour art has a very high competition rate. This means you need to get your site way up the page ranks before people will even see it.

Watercolour art would need to be mentioned a lot in the page content before Google would consider it relevant. At the moment that phrase isn't there at all.

You have 6 backlinks to the site and not from relevant sites. Paypal, Outfront etc are not relevant to your site. You need to get backlinks from art sites, preferably art sites with high Google PR.

SEO is not easy and takes a lot of research even then there's no guarantees. Reducing your prices is pointless if nobody sees the site.

You need to be putting your web address out in other ways. On the footer of every email you send. Letterheads, business cards. Do some flyers to leave in local art shops etc.

On top of everything Jaybee said...

I have to click 3 buttons before I can even buy something. People may be having trouble locating the stuff for sale.

I would at least put a featured artwork, or a random one on the homepage.

The questions & comments on the homepage should be replaced with some of your artwork (including prices). If people want to contact you, they can click Contact Us. If there is room, you have a one liner above or below whatever image/artwork you have displayed.

You might want to do a little research with your existing clients and ask them what they'd type into Google to find you - maybe have a look at client enquiry emails ( searching for something like - "do you sell X") you might find it's something completely different, like Cornish Watercolours or Watercolour Landscapes or something hopefully that doesn't have quite as much competition!

When you've worked out what the search terms are then type them into Google. Take a very close look at the sites that appear on the first page, look at their content, check the keywords, descriptions, use a backlink checker and see who is linking to them, what those sites have in common and what their page ranks are.

Don't be tempted to repeat the terms over and over again on the page or you'll get dropped for spamming. It needs to be used as part of natural language.

Nice stuff but I had a heck of a time to find out the prices. If you don't have a price list posted (I couldn't find it) then you will loose most people. You know art goes for from 50 cents US to Millions of dollars per painting. So what is it?

The How to Order link needs to be far more prominent. I would for example put it immediately under the headings as well as down the bottom of the page

West Country Gallery
How to Order

"The West Country has always fascinated me. With it's rugged coastlines and quaint villages the region has been a source of great inspiration for my work over the years."

Hmmm, thinks, find out about car boot sales in the areas you are doing paintings. Go to them with examples, nicely framed. Set up an uncluttered table, with a nice cloth. Although it's a boot sale think professional show, you'll stand out. Take business cards and some small flyers with painting thumbnails and web address, phone etc. You may sell a few paintings, you might also find you get local contacts who will stock them.

Get in touch with the local libraries.

Places like Clovelly there are loads of souvenir shops who may well be prepared to stock them for you. Put your prices back up, they're nice, don't undervalue them.

Offer framed and unframed, some people just can't be bothered to get them done properly.

Very useful advice, thankyou to all. I will certainly look in to making a few changes as suggested and see what happens.

watermark your images with your URL.

when someone accesses your site for the image only- decide how you wnat to deal with that... do you want them to be able to access the image without loading the page?

add more images to the site which will be picked up by google images which have the URL displayed all over the place- basicaly SEO through images on google image search...
