I created my site in FP2002 and never had any problems making and saving changes, publishing them was usually straightforward too.

I have just swapped to a new PC with Vista and have had Frontpage 2003 version installed. I needed to make a few home page changes and managed to remove the relevant festive graphics and selected 'Save' as I always did in FP2002. When I checked the preview, the changes had been made (or so it appeared). How wrong I was.

Publishing had to be aborted though because when the two panes showing the items in my local web and the remote web appeared - instead of seeing only the five items with a tick against them in my local web, this time almost every item in both panes had a question mark against it and it was obvious that my changes had not been saved either. Unsure why so many of the other items are in conflict as at the last publish all was matching and perfect.

I feel sure that I am missing something obvious and would be grateful for expert help please. Not sure whether to uninstall FP2003 and go back to my old faithful.

Maybe for now I should make the changes on the 'LIVE' web, but is it straight forward?

I have been intending to make a replacement site and am considering using Trellion so maybe this will have to happen sooner than later.

It sounds like the meta information that FP uses is corrupt. Sometimes the easiest way is to just sync the files and overwrite one (or the other) depending on the one that you know is the one you want. This sometimes can occur if you just copy your website from one HD to another.

You are closer than some, some people cannot even get FP 2003 to run on Vista unfortunately.

Thank you for quick response.

I did wonder about the 'sync' option but to be honest looking at the remote site which I would expect to be 'spot on' I am not convinced. Is it a viable option to open the web 'live' and make the necessary changes then publish the updated site back to my HD?

Whatever I do I will dread needing to alter anything else as the same problem will occur each time (if it is corrupt Meta info to blame) I guess.

I fought long and hard against changing computers for these precise reasons! but it was bought as a Christmas present so had to show willing.

When you went to the new vista PC how did you move your web onto it? If you just copied the one on your old computer and put it on the new vista computer then your web will probably get corrupted.

Here's how I do it and I never have had a problem: When going to a new computer PUBLISH your Frontpage web from your server down to your new computer.

A lot of people work live and they love it. I understand why but I would never suggest it. I want my data and I like my data. Working live on the server usually means I don't have a copy of the most current data. If something were to happen to the hosting company and they lost your data, you would be in trouble. Sure, you could sue them, etc but it won't bring your data back.

You could work live on the server and live with it but I never would.

In answer to your question - I copied my local web from the old pc to the new one by using an external hard drive I bought for the purpose of transferring files etc.

I 'almost' did the publish LIVE back to my hard drive but after reading an article saying that "You should never import it because it will only copy what the browser sees and will leave some files behind." Is publishing to the PC from the live site the same as importing? Afraid I am getting more and more confused.

It's seeing all the files on the local and remote site view saying CONFLICT that puzzles me, is this what suggests my web having been corrupted?

No, it is not the same. If you publish it, it will correct the meta information. Importing should as well well but the importing feature never did work as well as Microsoft would have hoped in my opinion.

Nope, Publishing is what you should do. Importing just copies files like you did when you copied from your hard drive.
