A New Year Gone Bad, Feedback please. - 1/5/2008 10:49:53
Ok I'm going to make this story very short, I had a pretty workable website last year, it displayed my work nicely, got a lot of hits, even had a newsletter that I updated every two weeks but I wanted some new, cleaner, modern, less cluttered. I purchased CS2 and it came with Golive, so I said this could be the step to take before going to Dreamweaver, plus I liked the grid conversion to CSS, very cool. I redesigned my site got ready to load it update Dec 31 after posting a billboard to say its coming, to find out that Golive has FTP issues and I couldn't do an easy upload short of going to my server and doing it one file at a time, which made update it a big problem. So I went back to frontPage until I can purchase Deamweaver and rebuilt the site again.

So I'm here to get some feedback even though I still have a few page's still to link and upload as well as add video, mainly because I'm a little disgusted and I'm 5 days behind with tons of other things to do.

Thanks all for listening and your feedback would be even more appreciated. Peace, fellow artist and designers.

why didn't you just ftp your files with a free ftp client like filezilla?!

i like the style of your art - at least after a quick look! might have a further browse later when i have more time (like in a few years :)

i like the layout and the navigation
)
the images with large areas of colour and not so many colours in an image should be saved as gifs (e.g. Gluttony) or 8-bit pngs (equivalent to gifs)

are any of your things for sale? if so it should say somewhere ;)

I tried a separate ftp program (SmartFTP Client) but I don't know if it's a Golive file type thing but I still got the same error message, I turned off the FrontPage extinctions on my host page but they still didn't upload. I went to the Adobe site and tracked the error code and tried half of their solutions with no positive results. So, it may have been something I missed but I think I tried everything at this point.

Yes they are for I'm working on a series of prints that would be a lot cheaper than the paintings, the prints will sell for $50 a piece.

Check back at the end of the month, the prints will be posted, they will be silk screened 20 prints per edition or give me an email address and I'll send out an announcement.

Thanks for the advice on Filezilla, it just may work, when I want to reformat the Golive version.

I know it's funny that I used the 2 software (Frontpage and Golive) that no ones makes anymore, thats the story of my life go figure. A fellow artist suggested just to do it in flash which is always an option, I know about 50% of flash, I wonder if Expressions is worth buying (any feedback on that question?), But I figured I should just stop playing and buy a copy of Dreamweaver in a few months or when my wife gets out of nursing school.

Thanks, peace

Hi

Coding aside I really like the look of your site - god I wish I was artistic! It's a reasonably simple layout and rebuilding it without the table shouldn't be too horrible a job.

I'd say generally avoid flash apart from for the odd animation or banner sort of thing. It's not a good idea to make a site 100% (or even 50%) Flash.

As far as whether to buy DW or not - well if you can afford it, fine BUT it is expensive and it's a complex bit of kit so you'll not only be trying to learn how to code a site using CSS/HTML but you'll be trying to learn how to use the software itself - if that makes any sense!

I understand that Expressions is better than FrontPage - but my personal view is, why pay for the software when there's perfectly good HTML editors around such as HTML-kit, PSPad etc etc that are totally free. The only drawback is that you really need to understand the code to use them as there's no WYSIWYG interface. But a quick trip to www.htmldog.com and www.cssbasics.com will help there - as will we obviously! In fact - even using FP, you can build a good CSS layout as long as you're careful, but again, understanding the code will help you beat FP into shape!

I dont think DW is that complex - just different. from what I have seen of Expressions, I intentionally mirrors DW. DW makes css extremely easy to incorporate once you see where it is and how to use it. you can paint a house with a brush and pail...or buy a sprayer to do it faster. depends partly on how many houses you plan on painting I guess
