I used to use spacer.gifs to push my navigation columns up to the top and recently decided to use valign="top" instead (makes the site more uniform, thus less work in the future). The problem is that my bottom pictures started floating around in the column so for the picture I valign="bottom" and my table border doesn't go down with the picture. (For some reason it looks alright in Firefox, but not in IE).

The page I am working on is

I even specified the table height (you can see on one of them I added height=156) and that didn't work.

This is how I want the page to look (this is the original with the spacer.gif.

My first thought was the problem has to do with TD rowspan, but it could be something else entirely.

I would really appreciate any help.

FP should allow you to click and drag that cell border and drag it down to where the image is....this would tighten it up as you would like.

Both pages look the same to me in I.E.7. If you have access to another computer, check them on it or clear your cache and take another look.

A couple of things: (1) it's never a good idea to fix table heights and, (2) site body text "runs into" adjacent table borders - adding Cell Padding using the table properties command will make the site appear less cramped resulting in more visual visitor appeal.

Thanks for the advice and for the constructive criticism.

I plan on pulling out the "fix" on the height. It was just one of my attempts to try and get it to look right. I also think you are right about adding just a tad of cell padding.

Swoosh, your solution seems to be the best one I have at the moment, but I see myself running into problems with that if I make a site wide adjustment.

I don't have any plans to make my navigation on the left any smaller (should only get larger), but if I do, then I will have to go back and fix each cell on each page individually. I will run into the same problem if I add text to the body of the article. That was the reason why I switched from the spacer.gifs. I don't mind adjusting them now because the site is only 60 pages or so, but when it gets to be 400 pages that will be tedious.

Other suggestions that might correct the problem would be greatly appreciated.

How about CSS for not only style but for layout also.
