womble -> InDesign file size question (1/6/2008 5:10:58)

Any InDesign users around?

I've got someone producing a newsletter for one of my sites, and she's using InDesign to produce it. She's new to the software though, and doesn't know that much about it (before everyone starts saying "Get a pro in!", it's a non-profit organisation, hence we're getting it done free by a member with the software [;)]). The finished product looks totally splendid (I nearly fell off my chair when I saw it - it does look really professional), but the file size is 2.3MB which is obviously far to big to be emailing to peoples.

Any users out there who could suggest how she can reduce the file size? I suggested to her checking the size (dimension-wise) and resolution of the photos and stuff she's got in it, but as I've no experience with InDesign, I'm at a loss as to what to suggest to her.

You have to sign up for this one

When I worked with InDesign I would save as PDF and that would reduce the file size somewhat. But, yes, the photos are what make the file size so big.

Thanks - I've passed the links along to her, and I mentioned the image size again.

Bringing this post back again - I've got a client who's using this to produce a monthly magazine. She's new to it so doesn't know much about it. Off-hand does anyone know if you can use this software to produce JPEGs etc as she wants to produce little ads for the website. I need to know if it's at least possible with this or whether I need to tell her to buy some proper graphics software for that.

Ta!

i'm fairly sure it it is - i'll check back in a short while when i'm back in windows...

[...short while] yes it does but you only get a choice of low, medium, high and er that's about it. better to export as a lossless bitmap (tif or bmp or even png?) then optimise from a different application if they have one

Right - thanks Dave!

InDesign is publication software not graphics software.
