When I worked with InDesign I would save as PDF and that would reduce the file size somewhat. But, yes, the photos are what make the file size so big.

Bringing this post back again - I've got a client who's using this to produce a monthly magazine. She's new to it so doesn't know much about it. Off-hand does anyone know if you can use this software to produce JPEGs etc as she wants to produce little ads for the website. I need to know if it's at least possible with this or whether I need to tell her to buy some proper graphics software for that.

i'm fairly sure it it is - i'll check back in a short while when i'm back in windows...
[...short while] yes it does but you only get a choice of low, medium, high and er that's about it. better to export as a lossless bitmap (tif or bmp or even png?) then optimise from a different application if they have one

InDesign is publication software not graphics software.

). The finished product looks totally splendid (I nearly fell off my chair when I saw it - it does look really professional), but the file size is 2.3MB which is obviously far to big to be emailing to peoples.
