it looks boring, but then i get easily bored with all these business directories.

the images are all resized to fit in that square format (but not properly in a graphics package) and look bad

text to close to thumbnails on left

boring header

no real colour scheme and coloured links would be nice

it wouldn't inspire me to use it. needs to be more consistent in use of colour, more attention paid to text padding and the images. product descriptions don't make much sense or at least don't appear user friendly

Why do people think we need more directories? Genuine question. There are thousands of them already.

Yours breaks badly in Firefox on the Mac. The pictures are being pushed all over the page not stacking on top of each other. It happens where the text isn't deeper than the picture so the next one gets pushed towards the middle.

It's left-aligned in everything but IE and it's only centred in IE because you've got it in quirks mode - I'd remove the XML declaration and step the DOCTYPE down from XHTML 1.1 to XHTML 1.0 as IE can't actually understand 1.1 and using the XML declaration is putting it in quirks mode (which means you have to rely on it's error handling routines).

If your web hosts ever decide to serve pages how you've specified (i.e. XHTML 1.1) then the site won't open at all in IE and it will only return error messages in modern browsers such as FF or Opera because there are coding errors.

So switch to a preferable doctype, remove the XML declaration, fix the centering by using margin: 0 auto instead of just text-align:center; Then fix the other coding errors.

From eCommerce point of view, the site is fine, for me. On your site, people know where to go and what are the featured products. The only concern for your site, I think, there are too much white space. You might put something there to make the site not boring.
Just a little opinion, thanks.

I have taken some time to give you my first ten things i saw in your website. I hope that you return the favor and view my website and give me the first ten things you see in my website.

Use css external files, this would keep your scripts less bountiful.

To change the items on your website home page would require a lot of work.

The alt titles of your images should be expanded. i.e. Business Directory -> North American Free Business Platform – it’s easy to use.

A webpage created with an html editor, such as Microsoft frontpage 4.0, can be twice as large in size that the same webpage created with a text editor. You should consider removing unneeded commands in your scripts.

You need to localize your website become a specialty store. Concentrate on a particular market, either and area (i.e. Dallas) or sector (i.e. People with old dogs).
Your logo/title ‘ Free Business Platform – it’s easy to use! Most people spend only a few seconds looking at your page. If this is what you want them to remember, make it bigger and more seeable.

I can see how to join, but don’t know why I should join. Give me a reason to join. Tell me the benefits.
I believe that your Company Database area is important to you, you should move it up above the fold if it is. The home page is valuable real estate, and the space above the fold is even more valuable.

Your top (green) navigation bar only has three places to go (links). The space could be used more efficient, and have more navigation.

Today’s Trade Information sounds to me like an area or subject that deserves space, but the space it deserves may not be on the home page.

Your Google search banner may not be useful to your users.

Good Luck with your website. I hope to hear from you soon.

the alt attributes should be as an ALTernative to the image, nothing else. so the business directory should say just that.

Hey Candy,

My opinion is that all images should be remove from the webpage and controlled by css. If you are going to have images on your web page, expand (within reason) the wording in the alt key. This may help accessibility and search engine robots index your website.

No that's not correct. All informational images should be in the markup itself - not in the stylesheet.

Non-informational images (background images, just-for-pretty icons etc) should be background images controlled by the stylesheet.

And eliminate the horizontal scrolling for those that use 800 res monitors.

So you are looking forward to have your site a one-time shop. It's interesting but a bit boring on it's homepage. It's a bit tight, i mean the text and the pictures are too close. You must have it like a spacious frontline. Or you can have them categorize instead of posting it all. You can actually just have that feature products on your homepage.

anderskorte -> RE: help me please (5/13/2008 8:52:27)

A very simple and easy facelift:

In the main title, give the word ”Business” the Arial font and let it be anti-aliased a little. Draw it closer to ”Directory” and left-align both of them. The logo is the first thing a viewer sees.
