Dell Dimension 5100 Problem - 1/14/2008 12:02:10
I have a problem that has got me bamboozled.

The pc only has usb connections and does not have ps2 keyboard and mouse connections. When I try to boot the pc It reacdhes the windows login screen (where the users are displayed but I cannot use the mouse or the keyboard to log in.

I can, however, use the keyboard to press F8 and start in safe mode or F2 for setup, so the keyboard does work through the usb connection, but once Windows takes control, the keyboard and mouse do not work.

I suspect that Windows has somehow disabled the usb driver but I have no way of getting into Windows to alter settings.

I would re-install Windows but I do not have an XP Home cd (just a bunch of XP Professional cd's). There is an option on the menu to create a Windows XP Home cd but once again without gaining access to Windows I can't burn the cd.

I don't believe that it is possible to download the files to create a Windows XP Home cd so, does anybody have any ideas?

Cheers

Steve

In Safe Mode:

Navigate to Start, then Run (enter).

Type the following: cmd then Enter.

Then type the following: chkdsk c: (space) /r (enter)

If this doesn't repair the system so that your keyboard/mouse are USB recognized, then it's time to reformat & pony-up for XP Professional :)

Thanks larry

However, although I can press F8 to go into Safe Mode, once it goes in I cannot use the mouse or keyboard (even in Safe Mode) to log in!!

This is making me wonder if it is software or hardware?

My guess (now) is hardware - motherboard which controls all USB functions :)

One final thought: While in Safe Mode, try navigating by using a series of Tab returns & up/down arrow commands.

You might be able to run the repair module this way, but, based on your comments, the operating system doesn't seem to be the root cause of your problem.

Good luck!

Here's what I would do...

First, try another USB port.

If that doesn't work, get a PS/2 keyboard, and then an adapter that converts it to USB.

If that still doesn't work, connect to your computer using another computer via Remote Desktop, and reinstall the drivers for your keyboard/mouse. If you are within a network, you should be able to connect using the 192.168.1... IP address of that specific computer, assuming you have another local computer within that network.

If you do NOT have that option, call your ISP, ask them what your IP address is. Then have a friend try to connect to your machine.

If that doesn't work, see if anyone locally has a Dimension 5100 that you could swap hard drives with, so you could uninstall the drivers.

Lastly (before you decide you have to reinstall XP), there is a utility to remove the XP login password. I would start the computer up, put in a CD that auto runs and automatically uninstalls the keyboard/mouse drivers.

Thanks for everything guys.

I ended up re-installing Windows over itself (to leave all the links etc.) and everything came back to normal.

The PS2 conversion might have worked if I had the time.
