small browser changes header shape - 1/15/2008 9:14:19
http://www.rationalservice-sw.co.uk/real/

I made the layout 800 pixels, not 780 thinking that surely not many people left use 800x600 but if they do a small horizontal scroll bar will not be too much trouble.

But in both Firefox and IE, if you drag the window size to say 790 and smaller, the red band below the header jumps up and covers some of the header.

Does someone know a fix for this please?

Thanks
Phil

Hi Phil

You've got a & n b s p ; just before your banner image - remove it and it seems to behave again.

I'd disagree about not many people using 800px screen width though - in the last 6 months four of my clients have got huge wide screens with it set to 800px wide (mmm attractive!).

Thanks very much Tailslide, it did the trick.

What that was doing there I really dont know and I jump to the conclusion its something deep and mystical about ccs layout design.

I would not have found it without your help - thank you.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the 800x600 and I have seen clients wanting it on new screens as well but have you noticed some sites and quite prominent ones, seem to be fixed at 1024x768. Can't recall all the ones I have noticed but Sky News is one. Trouble is clients quite often don't grasp that people have the small resolution set, especially when they have the latest 20" screen and don't like all the whitespace!

Regards
Phil

Oh I agree with you - I had a client the other day telling me how he loved his (four year old, fixed width 760px wide) site but what about all that space either side. I then had to think up a tactful way of saying that he frankly didn't have the content to fill a full width site!! Apparently he'd gone to some marketing conference where people had to put their hand up and volunteer their sites for criticism from some "marketing" expert... and he put his hand up :)

I tend now to either go for fluid (not-completely fluid - will generally go up to around 1200px wide or down to 760px) or elastic (especially if it's a smallish site with not a lot of content).

The last 3 projects I did / are doing specified for that size browser window. Not my preference but the customer is always right. :)
