Anyone know how to create a popup window in EW? - 1/15/2008 10:33:28
Hi - my website - www.englishbiz.co.uk - is used by school students who want help with their school English course. To keep pages shorter and more readable I create hyperlinks on a few technical words on each page that can be clicked if needed. When clicked a small web page opens in the top left corner of the main page (300x300 wide with nothing but a scroll bar if needed). The pop-up window is just a small web page that contains an explanation of the hyperlinked technical term. These pop-ups were first created when I used Namo WebEditor but when I moved to FP2003 I used the Jimco Spawn add-in, which did the job quickly and admirably. Sadly this does not work with Expression Web so I am currently having to revert to using FP2003 on a laptop when I need to insert a popup window. This is a genuine pain! I have tried using EW "behaviours" to create a popup window "onclick" but if there is more than one pop-up window on a page the behaviour is erratic to put it mildly. Can anyone help please?

Thanks for the tip. The difficulty is it would take an awfully long time to use an external wizard of this kind. I suppose I have become used to the ease of use of the integrated Jimco Spawn pop-up maker. What a shame EW lacks such a useful feature.

Well pop-ups are becoming less and less popular. Jimco had created the Spawn feature that easily built into Frontpage (I never used it). But Frontpage also allowed users to create websites without knowing a bit of code. Now, it seems that the tables have completely turned. The wizard though is good if you are using it on multiple pages. You can save the JavaScript as an external file and then it can easily be called when needed. And once you have the code, you can edit as needed. Of course, there are scores of other ways to create pop-ups, but browsers though are taking over pop-ups for security reasons and relying on them might just cause more problems.

Yes, I see your point. The kind of popup I use is not really of the same kind as what are traditionally known as "popups", mine are just small web pages that open like a normal hyperlink on a mouse click. That's why I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. I need a small pre-sized web page to open in a new window and appear in the top lh corner of an existing web page. When I search for "popups" it's clear that what is usually meant is the advertising type features that are so annoying and which, as you say, browsers have ways of blocking.

You might take a look at Dynamic Drive's website, specifically links and tool tips to see if any of them suit your fancy
