Looking for shopping cart recommendation... - 1/25/2008 13:20:08
I've always used Mals-e or ZenCart for my client shopping cart solutions. I need something a little different this time and am hoping someone out there can suggest some options. I need a cart where the client can manage their own products. The client wants to sell their wildlife photos online. I need to be able to add one product (a photo) that has three options with different prices (a price for note cards, a price for a 5x7 photo, and a price for an 8x10 photo). I don't want to play with adding the photo three times as three different products. Does that make sense? I've never set-up anything like this except by hand coding. However in this case I need something that the client can easily upload their own products. Any ideas? Thanks!

Have you checked ecommercetemplates.com? That will support that feature; being able to sell 1 product with 3 options. I have good luck with it and have used it on several sites. Hope it helps.

X-Cart has a way to add a product with custom variations (such as color, size, etc..) I would think that OsCommerce (or even ZenCart) could also do this by default. If you haven't yet, post on the shopping cart forums and ask how it is done, or if it is even possible. If you're fine with ZenCart or OsCommerce, then there is no reason to pay for X-Cart.

OsCommerce will give you the possibility to add many options and attributes to one product. All through the admin panel. Once your customer is briefed with it, it is fairly easy to maintain.

Have a look at JAlbum. I've done sites for pro photographers in the past where they have a couple of thousand photos with, say, five varieties for sale. One particular client had PayPal so I copied the Add to Cart code, put it in Excel, made the variables (Item Name, Item Code) formulae with a lookup table containing the item code and name. The item code plus ".jpg" was also the filename of the photo so the Excel bit could change the image src attribute as well. It wasn't a proper database but it worked well in FP2002 though it too a while to upload all the images. JAlbum is still around and is doubtless much better than when I last used it. Good luck!
