mitch -> Blasphemy to Reality - IE (1/28/2008 17:39:03)

A few years ago the idea that IE was going to lose dominance was horrific to some and laughable to others.
I remember being chastised on this forum.
If IE8 does not really shine it may be it's last hurrah.
The world is going to follow Finland sooner or later unless MS
does something really unexpected.

The figures are impressive - it'd be interesting to know what the Opera figures are too - you'd think they'd be quite high too.

As long as IE is bundled with Windows and as long as the majority of PCs are shipped with Windows then IE will always have the largest share of the market. It's still the poor relation compared to Opera and Firefox and... well pretty much any other browser - but that's not the point.

There are three points I think that stick out to me:

Firstly - that IE's market share is low enough even so that using testing on other browsers is a "must-do" for everyone rather than a series of excuses about no-one using anything apart from IE6.

Secondly - What we could really do with is a little competition in the OS market. It would be wonderful if Apple would start offering a version of their brilliant OSx for PCs and Dell is now shipping some machines with Linux.

Thirdly - it seems to me that MS would no doubt prefer to do away with IE altogether and have more integrated applications that take you online without ever opening a browser - in a similar way to iTunes. It would seem to me that in the end they probably will stop upgrading IE and or abandon it all together as it doesn't in itself seem to be a money-maker for them - in fact the reverse.

Tailslide, I counldn't agree more on that one but the other two I think are flawed.

That is not a trivial task at all. It's not easy developing an OS. I wonder how many people actually realize the huge amount of man-hours and resources that went into developing 'Nix, Windows, OSX, or any other flavor. It's easy to say "Oh, just make a new OS" but extremely difficult to do.

Do you really want this? You want even more security holes, patches, and the like to deal with? I thought that was one of the big no-no's of IE? Don't encourage them...[;)]

EDITED: I didn't want to kill another anti-MS thread..sorry..[&o]

After re-reading my post, I just want to be clear this was not my intention. [;)] FF is *my* preferred browser as well.
