There is a good list of Open Source to go at including Joomla, Mambo, Drupal, Nucleus, Wordpress and others. if you go to the Link Stuff section of my web there are links to all of their web sites, which all have forums (fora?) and I've suggested some books that you can get from Amazon. CMS is more complex than page based and has advantages and a different set of difficulties but hopefully the links will give you some idea about each option. Good luck

Has the website already been created, and now you just need to have a CMS to manage it?

I need a good CMS for a current website and for future use on new websites. My hosting company will install WordPress but I am not sure how good it is.

WordPress is a very nice bit of software. It's designed as a blog but it's easy to use as a CMS for a non-blog site. I use it a lot for clients because it produces good code, it's easy to use and there are thousands of plugins to enhance a site. From a non-coder's point of view there are thousands of different themes out there so you should be able to find one you like! WordPress works well cross-browser (depending on the theme) too. It's not the answer for everybody but if you've got a simple site structure then it's great. Like everything there's a learning curve but there's a huge WP community out there to help.

The thing to get with WordPress is that it stores information in two different ways - Posts and Pages. A page is just what it sounds like - a whole page in it's own right whereas a Post is a time-related chunk of information that you might use in a blog. For a CMS you want to use Pages for most of the pages in your site but Posts are useful if you ever want to publish articles as there are dozens of ways of categorising posts which you can use on a website. For instance, I have a client with a WP site - mostly pages (you know the usual, homepage, about us, contact us etc) but she's a writer - so she stores the articles she publishes for magazines as posts and has an little archive just for that - fairly easy to set up. The other thing is that if you're using it as a normal CMS you need to find the Option which allows you to specify the front page (just create a new Page and call it Home for instance) then go to the options section and select that page as the home page and ta da! CMS! I should have mentioned - try typing "WordPress Theme" into Google and you'll get about a million pages on there over and above the "offical" list of themes on Wordpress.org. Here's a nice article about some overlooked but pretty themes: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/02/09/83-beautiful-wordpress-themes-you-probably-havent-seen/

A million thanks Tailside. I am getting the feel for the console and you just helped me take a big jump forward.
