Mulitple domain names and search engines - 1/31/2008 13:31:56
Hi,
I have a main site that does well in search engines...I know that Google frowns upon the use of any other domain name that redirects to the main site.
I have 3 extra domain names...they all have keywords in them.
What is the best way to utilize extra domain names?
Make the content completely different from the main site but include links to the main site?
Any help appreciated.

It's not the redirect that Google frowns upon so much as the method of redirect. Many redirects are 302 (temporary) redirects. This includes the ASP response object...
Once the search bot finds your redirect it makes a couple of assumptions. 1. You intentionally used a temporary redirect and 2. the location of the destination of the redirect is a TEMPORARY location.
So, if you have a couple of on topic pages and they redirect to your main page using a 302 - you are telling the bot that your main page is a temporary location for where the redirect originated.
You should use 301 (permanent) redirects if your going to do any.

I have not yet told Google to spider these domains.
I'll have to ask my host about the kind of redirections they use.
I was thinking about populating these domains with a product graphic that links to my main domain....but I'm sure I'd be charged extra for it.

If you post your website address, we can tell you what kind of redirect it is setup as.
If you don't want Google to spider the address, then don't post it as a link ;)
