Hello,
I am hoping somebody can shed a little light on a problem, I am having !!
I currently use FrontPage on Windows XP to manage my site, with no problems whatsoever. However, I recently wanted to transfer my site from one computer, to another. I copied the whole lot on to a disc and transferred this to FrontPage on the second computer. This all loaded up with no problems and I was able to edit and save it, just as I did before. The problem came when it was time to publish it. It went through the same process as it did on the first computer and when it finished, the message saying it was successful, appeared. However, when I then went online to check it out, nothing had changed. It is still working fine, on the first computer, but does not want to work on the second one. As I say, I can edit it and publish it with no problems at all; it just does not appear to accept the changes when I check the site on line.
Have tried refreshing, rebooting etc, and no luck.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

P.S. One other thing, the version of FrontPage on the second computer is newer than the first. I do not have the original version. I would have thought that if that was the problem, I would not be able to edit it, or publish it.

Paul,

All FrontPage files are forward compatible, so that's not the problem.

Try: (1) >>Tools >>Recalculate Hyperlinks then republish. If that doesn't work, (2) (assumes FrontPage 2003), >>File >>Publish>> Synchronize (check box at lower right of screen once connected to server).

When I want to transfer sites to another machine I usually publish down to it ie. remote to local. In this way all the FP files are transferred including any hidden ones. Try doing that now to see if anything changes.

Good point, caz, especially for versions prior to 2003.

Publish Down instructions are:

(1) In FrontPage, open your server files by clicking File >>Open, (2) Browse to “My Network Places” (3) In the File Name field type the complete web site address, for example: " http://www.yourwebsite.com", (4) Enter your username & password when prompted, (5) Once the server files open in FrontPage click File >> Publish Site and, (6) For the address to publish, enter a destination on your hard drive, for example: C:\My Documents\My Webs\mysite. (Note: if the location doesn’t exist on your hard drive, you will be prompted to “Create? Yes or No”. Answer Yes.)

Last step: Republish to Host Overwriting all Files - Site will then be “In Step”

Thanks very much indeed for all your help. I'm afraid however, I have got a little stuck along the way. I managed the >>Tools>>Recalculate Hyperlinks, then republish, although this did not work. I then tried >>File>>Publish>>Synchronise, however I did not have the option for just Publish under File, it says Pulish Web, so I therefore was unable to find anything to do with Synchronise, or check any box at lower right of screen.
I then tried Opening my server files by clicking File >>Open, (2) Browse to “My Network Places” (3) In the File Name field type the complete web site address, for example: " http://www.yourwebsite.com", After this stage it opened up all the files in my web site. I did not get the option to enter my user name and password, so I could not move on to step 5.
Sorry if I'm being a bit dull here but I'm getting a little lost.

If your site opened then don't worry about entering your user name and password (which is what the user name and password was for). Just proceed with the steps that Larry gave you.

This should have opened your server files, not local files. Please clarify. Also, tell us what version of FrontPage you are using.

Shouldn't that be File>>Open Site

Ok, you can do it this way too, but follow these steps: >>File >> Open >> input complete path statement to your site, e.g. http://www.yoursite.com, >>Return. Input username/password when prompted, then scroll through server files and click on index.htm (html). Site will display which will be verified on the top bar in FrontPage. Select the Web Site tab, then >>File >>Publish Site.

Follow previous steps (5) and (6) to publish down, then follow last step to get local/host files "In Step".

Thanks once again for all your help, you are no doubt on the right track, its just I do not seem to be getting anywhere. I can get the site to display, but I am not sure how to do the following:

Select the Web Site tab, then >>File >>Publish Site. What do you mean by select the web site tab?

I also can not pulish it to another destination, it just says this destination does not exist or is hidden!!!!

I'm not sure what I am doing at all, sorry guys its so frustrating, its driving me nuts.

It opens up my web site files which I am assuming are my server files. I click on index and it opens my home page. I try to publish it but it asks for another destination. This is where it goes wrong as I stated above when I go looking for somewhere to put it and type a location in the box at the bottom it says it does not exist or is hidden. I am using Frontpage 2002.

From my comments above: (6) For the address to publish, enter a destination on your hard drive, for example: C:\My Documents\My Webs\mysite. (Note: if the location doesn’t exist on your hard drive, you will be prompted to “Create? Yes or No”. Answer Yes.)

Settles that. FrontPage 2002 does not have the Synchronize feature.

Thank-you very very much. I have now managed to work it out with your help.
One last question. Can I still upload to my site using either computer. I know that what I upload will be slightly different, unless I make the same alterations on each computer. I was just wondering if I could actually do it, as this computer as had to be set back to factory conditions twice.

Paul,

You can but, to ensure integrity, the best practice (this assumes server files are valid/current) is to publish down anytime you designate a new active computer.

Paul, if I make changes from my pc I always publish down to my laptop afterwards (or vice versa) to ensure that both copies of the site are up to date.
