FAQ : No server on port 80? - 12/7/2001 7:27:32
I use Front Page 98 at home. I tried to open a web last night
and got the message "there is no server on port 80 at pavilion." The computer is an HP Pavilion using Windows 98. This error comes up on any of the several webs that I have in my computer. My webs are located in the c:\webshare\wwwroot directory. I can start a new web as long as it's in a different location. I don't ever remember getting this message. I defragged my system last week - maybe this has something to do with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know if this is right, but it worked for me. I restart my computer and sign on my ISP again and it works. That error used to drive me nuts and I was on microsoft.com looking for it everywhere. Still don't know what one has to do with the other, but.......

Thanks for the input. I'll try both suggestions.

I went to Microsoft's help site from the advice of one of you, but I don't understand how to change the port setting. I tried reinstalling FP 98 on my computer, but I came up with the same problem. I can, however, start a new web that resides on the c drive. One of the websites that I can't access resides on my hard drive but is listed as http://pavilion/houseofwheels when in the open web dialog box. I don't understand this server thing that goes on in Front Page. These webs worked fine one day and did not open the next. Thanks for looking.

Here is a good site to learn about using PWS.
