all the eggs in one basket? - 2/11/2008 10:09:39
I've been told by a potential client that he plans to build his site himself through, for example, verio, and wants to add a shopping cart to it in the future. If that's his choice, so be it, but I'd like to suggest to him that it might not be the best choice. I've always thought that it was not a good idea to have all the eggs in one basket, and that it is preferable to have a site that stands independent of a provider. My understanding is that sites built through provider templates cannot be moved if there's a problem. Comments, please?

Thanks. Linda

Well apart from anything else the quality of these make-your-site-in-5-minutes sort of sites are just appalling.

I'd tell him that you get what you pay for. If he wants a nice little hobby site for his friends and family - then fine do it. If he wants a business site that looks professional then he needs to pay for a professional to do the job.

BUT - I have to say Linda that he sounds like a total cheapskate and that you're probably better off letting him go do his thing. If he's going to be one of those clients that frankly fails to see the value of a properly designed site then he's going to be a real pain in the arse all the way through the process and after it!!

You are no doubt absolutely correct! I'd like to think that he is so new to the whole idea of having a web presence that he just doesn't get it, but you probably have a more realistic picture of what would happen if I try to change his mind. Perhaps I should just wish him well, and then wait til the whole thing doesn't work for him. It would probably save a great deal of aggravation! Thanks. Linda
