what hosting provider it is better to choose for ecomme... - 2/24/2008 14:29:58
Hey guys, I am sorry I would like to warn I am nowise in web hosting services. I am planning to have an internet shopping web site developed for selling sewing machines and I need to choose affordable web hosting provider at the moment. I have found the list of popular hosting companies and various discount coupons at www.hostingcoupons.com Which of these hosting companies would you recommend me to choose for successful development of my web site. Could you share your experience of dealing with these companies? What factors do I have to take into consideration when choosing hosting provider for online shopping web site? Thanks in advance.

Not looking at the link you provided - check out the post whats the best place to get web hosting.

I would recommend Hostway, ORCS Web, TechEvolution for hosting.

Having said that, BobbyDouglas on here runs Arizona Web Design, Hosting, and Marketing and talking with him one some other issues, he seems like he really cares for his customers. Hostway is a fairly large company but I was with them when they were smaller. They were a great company back then, but they have grown and unfortunately usually that means something suffers - usually customer support.

I would look at some of the hosting companies - not just ones that will give you some discount. That might be good, but having your website up 24/7 is even better (I promise).

Another one that I use for a few things as well is myChoiceWeb.

Thanks Corey :)

I was a Hostway customer back in the day too. Their service was great at the time.

I was drawn to their great deals. I forget why I left, but then I went to IPowerWeb after awhile. The service at IPW was pretty solid, and the price/affiliate benefits were amazing (since then the service is crap, and the prices are just as good).

Places like IPowerWeb that simply focus on lots of space for low prices, are hosts I would suggest you stay away from, especially for a 24/7 e-commerce store.

There are hosts that will lure you in with low prices and massive amounts of space. They normally overload the servers to the point where customer websites suffer. Not only that, but in order to make money, they have to have 50+ more times the number of customers to make up for the price difference. So more customers to deal with per server to make the same amount of money as a company who sells at higher prices.

When picking out a host, look for ones that have an affordable price. They don't have to be the cheapest, but they have to be pretty reasonably priced.

You should also think about your clients. Are they local? Are they international? If you plan on having clients all over the world, you will want to pick a host that has multiple bandwidth providers, and hardware in place to make sure your clients are routed through the quickest route.

I also think customer service and support is a must. Try to find a host that responds within 30 minutes or less with support.

Anyways, this is just my opinion on what a good host is. A lot of people are completely satisfied paying a couple bucks a year to get massive amounts of space. If that's good enough for your business, then there is no reason to waste money paying something more.

What do you think about namecheap, as far as I know they are reliable domain name registrar and they have launched hosting now? Have you ever had experience with them?

A tip someone once gave me about selecting hosts is to find out what their support phone number and email address are, and contact them with any queries you have about their services through that. Sales email addresses are geared towards responding to customer enquiries quickly to attract the customer, but to find out what their response times are really like, try going through the support route as you'll get a much better idea of how they respond to customers that way (even if it's only to tell you that you've used the wrong address and to try the sales one :) though whether they just give you the sales email or try and answer your question themselves or contact their sales people on your behalf can also be an indication of decent support).

For domain registration, I used to use GoDaddy - but stopped because buying a domain or renewing a domain was just horrific (all the upsaling that was done during checkout). I switched to DirectI for most of the domain names, except for the .ws - it seems that that one is not able to be transferred to another registrar

Curious. They have a little checkbox that you can bypass all that crap. I have quite a few domains thru GoDaddy. Don't host anything there but I get all my domains there. Personally, I find them to be one of the smoothest around (interfaces that is).

Just because NameCheap offers domain registrations, does not mean they would be good at hosting. GoDaddy is great for domains, but their hosting servers and support absolutely SUCK!

They are one of the hosts that fall into the category of cheap prices for lots of space/bandwidth. I have heard good things about serverfly.com, not sure how they are now, but when I tested out their support about 8 months ago, they seemed pretty responsive.

DirectI and Enom are at the top in terms of resellers for domain names. Enom has been solid for a lot longer than Directi, but that doesn't mean Enom is better. The main reason why I am with Enom is the API integration that is available in some of our other software. Clients can login to their account and manage their domain names. Directi also has an API, but they were a little behind the full API, not sure if they have everything now, but they didn't before when we made our decision. Directi has better pricing, and free private whois with every domain, very good sellers imo. Enom charges quite a bit for private whois (around $6-$7 per domain, per year).

Our clients pay a little more than 2 cents per day for their domain registration through us, compared to going with the cheapest company available. We have clients that pay NetworkdSolutions $35/year, and are still perfectly happy. Most people won't care about an extra couple cents per day, if it helps them feel more confident that everything will be working.

I probably had missed it. I could not transfer a ws domain and needed to renew it there - kind of frustrated because I called GoDaddy to find out why I could not see the authorization code and they said .ws domains do not need one. But on the other site (DirectI), their FAQ said .ws TLDs were not transferable.
