Search options? - 2/27/2008 15:49:30
I've been working to develop a fairly simple site that would include many pictures and videos. The person who I'm doing it for decided he wants a search function to locate these files. He's also requested that I build it in Dreamweaver and use Filemaker Pro as a database. I've since discovered that using Filemaker may not be the best idea and I really have very little experience with databases. I'm wondering if there are any other options to implement a search function into a website.

We're using iSearch (written in PHP) to handle the searches on our website. It will crawl your site based on information you specify within the admin area. It is completely customizable, and works great. How do you plan to search for the files? File name? Keyword on a page the file is included on?

Well I think we're going to use keywords that would be associated with each file.

Are you saying that you would have a search that would have all of the files inside the database, and then keywords inside the database that correspond to the file? If each file can have its' own html page, and then on that page, it links directly to the file, then I believe the iSearch script I mentioned will work. If you need to have keywords attached to each file, then what I mentioned won't work.

We're still examining the keyword idea. I'm wondering, after looking at the isearch site, if you could have it show thumbnails rather than links?

Don't think that is supported. However, you could have a thumbnail link that will use some sort of ajax or lightbox effect to display the contents of the page. 4Images might be a good script too. I PMd you a link to one of our client's sites that uses it for their videos.
