Media Streaming Host - 2/28/2008 13:45:11
We need to be able to stream audio and video files. Our host does Host support streaming (it's a shared server). Can anyone recommend a reliable streaming media host? Thanks for your help. Stephen Green

Here is my Hostway story - I was with them back at the end of the 20th century, way before unmetered bandwidth was not even heard heard. And I was helping a very popular little three minute movie back then as being a mirror site. My bandwidth increased quite a bit, and sometimes, my bill was over $1,000 a month. At one point, Hostway decided to start to offer unmetered packages. The billing department actually called me to let me know. They told me that it was not going to happen for another three months, but they had enacted the plans on my account. So my hosting bill went from $1,000 to $49.95 basically overnight. Hostway has grown over the years and probably has become more "corporate". And with that type of environment, something will suffer - usually customer support. Now, while I have not used them in probably seven years or so, I still remember how helpful they were. But depending on how much you need, you might also consider a dedicated solution. We were with CalPop for a few years - service was good. Nothing to brag about. Now we are with TechEvolution hosting two dedicated servers. They have some shared plans which might also be in your budget. But before you decide, consider how much you might be needing and possibly when you might have a large number of hits. That way, you can let the hosting company know and if they reply to you in a positive manner, that might be a good way to choose.

Thanks for your reply. However, we were looking from streaming specialists. Sites that just host your media files and provided streaming. We are also interested in Flash (flv) streaming, because most browsers now support Flash. Any other suggestions? Stephen

Are you looking for a free site that hosts videos? Then use Vimeo.com They stream a higher resolution video or flash then utube or any other free streaming site that I know of. You know that free video hosting sites compress the heck out of your video? For pay steaming hosts, check out Adobe here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/fvss/ In any event, use Flash for your videos as most everyone has the flash player.
