for Mac? - 2/29/2008 14:04:46
Well, a month ago, i finally got fed up with Microsoft's antics and bought a iMac. I love it. It's everything that a PC isn't and showed me how simplified a personal computer can really be. So here's my problem.

Until now, i was using Expression Web for my WYSIWYG editor and Paint Shop Pro X for my graphics editor. Now since design is just a part time thing for me, i've taken a break from and and am not sure when i'll go back, but have a small handful of clients that i still update from time to time. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for either or both apps for the Mac that wouldn't break the bank.

I know i can just whip out notepad (or whatever it's called on OSX), but i like the convenience of Expression Web. And i have no idea what to use for a graphics editor.

Does anyone have suggestions?

thanks,
Lil

They're lovely aren't they?

There are quite a few editors ranging from simple text editors to Dreamweaver - BBedit seems to be one of the popular ones. I only use my mac for fun so I haven't had to do any actual coding in it yet.

BBEdit seems to be the one most folks I know use. Dreamweaver is nice but it ain't cheap. Tell us about your Mac I've been on the fence with with PC or Mac. I received a free copy of Vista placed it on my laptop and was so disappointed I took it off and put XP Media Center back on it.

If you're used to using a PC and playing around in the Registry and Win folders when you get a problem, the Mac will scare the heck out of you because there's nothing to play around with.

I like the Mac until something stops working because I don't have a clue what to do about it.

As to the original question I use Photoshop and Rage or Taco

You guys have the same responses I'm experiencing.

I'm actually having to look up how to do simple thing that were second nature on a PC. I actually had to look up uninstalling a program the other day, because there's no control panel option to do that. As it turns out, Jaybee is excactly right, there is no registry to complicate anything. Every proggy is self contained in its own folder, usually symbolized by an icon. Drag it into the trash and that proggy's no longer on the mac. period. no lengthy uninstall procedures. Which becomes dangerous when you accidentally drop on of the major one in and it's gone. I've grown so accustomed to thinking that everything has multiple deeper levels by way of folders and in various locations. No such thing with a mac.

In Feb, 2007, i ordered a new Dell desktop, b/c my old pc had met its maker. It came with Vista and i was really excited to see how it ran. That was the last time i was ever excited about Vista. Over the course of a year, i had to reformat my HDD and deal with various hardware issues. I ended up wiping my drive (losing everything) over a dozen times. I got really good at backing up the important stuff on disk. I then installed a copy of XP and ran into similar issues. Like i said, it was software and hardware, but after the last wipe, i gave up and bought the 24" iMac.

mac's don't get viruses, they're simple, they're intuitive and they're not a pc. I'm going on a month and i still feel like a newb most of the time. games are practically non-existent, but that's good cause it makes me spend more time outside. They've got a nifty little proggy called VMWare Fusion that creates a virtual drive on your HDD and let's you install a different OS on it, so my mac has XP running on it when i boot the program. No rebooting or dual booting, it runs virtually right there and starts and ends in seconds. Problem is, it feels kinda foreign when i run the programs that i asked you guys about. Frustratingly, there's no right click options (useful ones) with a mouse on OSX and the right click is kind of my bread and butter. And honestly, after my experiences, i'd like to avoid MS OSs altogether, so i'm trying to limit putting anything on there but actual mac programs.

So there you go. I could keep going for days, but to summarize it, i love the mac. I was a PC snob for years and badmouthed all those elitist mac users, but i got old enough to wise up and try something new and not be so stupid, so i got the mac. Right move.

thanks for the input, i'll give BBEdit a look at. I've got a copy of photoshop for the pc and actually prefer paint shop pro as it's not so complicated. And i've been using it for so long that i'm comfortable with it.

thanks for listening.
